Distance Covered
I was watching the UEFA Champions League quarter Finals (soccer), and there's an interesting stat called distance covered. At the end of a game, it gives you the names of the players who covers the most distance. I think top players cover 12-13 kilometers (about 8 miles) in a game.
It's calculated by using advanced sony cameras and some sophisticated video processing software.
I've done some research and according to these statistics, on average, 1/10th of the distance covered by a player is sprint. So, a top soccer player covers 1.2 to 1.3 kilometers while sprinting. A sprint is classed as a run made at quicker than seven meters per second, equivalent to running 100m in a sharp 14 seconds.
I haven't come across to a similar stat for NBA but I was having a discussion with some friends. Some argued that an NBA player who averages, say 38mpg, would cover more distance in a game than a soccer player. Some argued the opposite way.
What do you think about this? How much distance do you think would be covered by an NBA player who plays 38-40mpg. How much of it would be sprint?

Forget about the fact that a soccer game is nearly twice as long as a basketball game, a soccer field is much larger than a basketball court. I'd look up the dimensions to prove my point if I wasn't so lazy...
Length of a soccer field is about 100-120 meters and width is 80-90 meters. 1 meter is like 3.2 feet so figure it out.
It'll be interesting to use the same system on basketball players. Sure they don't cover as much as soccer players but still it would be an interesting stat.
