This would be a great point if your estimation of their ultimate potential was anything other than idle speculation. Though I do agree you can't go wrong with either pick, it's hard to overvalue an 18 year old freshman who led the nation in rebounding and was #3 in scoring. I've read all your arguments, they just didn't convince me.

People honestly act like Beasley is one of those 3-4 year seasoned college vets with little to no upside. It's hilarious.

Just because he put up monster numbers and is mature beyond his years as a post player doesn't mean the guy is near his ceiling.

The guy has limitless potential because of his elite athleticism/skillset for a PF.

PFs aren't supposed to have slashing ability, perimeter range, and post play combined like Beasley has offensively. And they certainly aren't supposed to combine that with the ability to snatch rebounds out the air on either end of the floor.

There are no physical limitations from preventing Beasley from not only being a top 5 PF, but a top 5 player in the entire league.

Wow, way to overreact to what I said.

Anyways, my point is I don't think theres a top flight number one guy in this draft. WIth the exception of the Pistons, every team in the past two decades has had that superstar leading them, Dwade, Shaq, TD, MJ, Hakeem, Isiah, Magic, Bird. It's not an insult to say Beasley or Rose won't be in that eschelon, but they simply don't have the combination of size, skills, and athleticism to dominate at that level.

And unless you think guys of Amare or Al Jeff caliber are spectacular players, then I guess you're easy to impress. B/c that's basically the level I think Beasley will be at, and what I think most people on this board will attest to as well.

Poor, poor Collison. The guy was just frustrated out there.

Yeah, the way he's dominating these top notch point guards offensively and defensively is really something.

One thing that Rose has on Paul at this stage:

DEFENSE

Paul ended his college career getting blown off the court by a little-known freshman named Darris Nichols.

Rose is ending his career humiliating the top PG's in the country one by one.

both will be superstars in diff ways

rose will be a tremendous pg in the same breath as kidd and paul at his height...i just think that when he gets to the nba he will struggle for a while

beasley i think is ready to score 20 and 10 right now in the nba...i think he will have a melo like impact in the nba and will work next great to a true 1st option (wade)

so for me its like comparing melo/boozer mix and kidd...for my heat team, i think we need that melo/boozer mix inside and out we dont need another playmaker next to wade as much a big time scoring threat

I think you're underrating the type of player Amare Stoudemire has developed into this season. He's one of the most efficient players in the league this season. He's improved vastly defensively and he's even more amazing at his natural position PF.

Beasley most definitely has superstar potential.

To say he doesn't have the combo of size, skills, and athleticism to dominate is laughable because those are all the reasons why he's such a rare prospect.

He's got the prototypical size of the PF of the future, his post skills are incredibly developed for a 19 year old, and he's a top flight athlete especially at the PF position.

In fact there isn't a PF in the league with the combo of athleticism, post skills with power as well as finesse, and range on their jumper like Beasley. I don't how you can honestly say he doesn't have superstar potential.

If he doesn't have superstar potential with that combo, then who does?

And Derrick Rose? He's got elite size and athleticism for a PG. He needs to refine his skills, but honestly how can you say those guys don't have superstar potential?

Cammo101 wrote:I do not want to hijack an otherwise interesting thread, but KG is nowhere near Duncan. Duncan is a guy who's impact is far above his actual numbers. KG, on the other hand, is a guy who's numbers outweight his actual impact. Is KG a very good player? Of course. But, all time greats do not have KG's playoff record and all time greats do not disappear down the stretch of games for a decade. Just because KG finally begged his way on to a team where he does not have to carry the load, does not mean we now need to pretend he ever could/did.

I love KG, he is one of my favorite players to watch. But, he is far closer to the Brands and the JO's than he is the Duncans and the Shaqs.

Brand JO are you joking. I always love when someone finishes by saying the love the player they just finished bashing. Jermaine O'neal who hasn't done anything and not only that but the Pacers have often played better without him. He is a horribly efficient player and really a defensive specialist that rebounds at below average level.

To me your post reflects the old KG hate. Oh he just about stats. Yet for years the Wolves were actually pretty decent and maybe better than lets say this years Magic. Seriously if Orlando played in the West they probably say the same about Dwight for the next 10 years. As he probably barely make the playoffs or out in the first round. Now he on a team with some talent. There winning and thats not enough now because they want him to put up the stats again. The Celtics could have won nearly 70 games if KG stayed healthy all year but were talking about him in the breath of Elton Brand.

I find the people that consistently underrate KG are the ones that underrate the supporting cast of Duncan.

There are some guys that people hate on for no reason. And when they are so efficient their only rebuttal is that the player hasn't won a championship.

I wonder if Beasley will be one of those type of guys.

Nothing in his game you can pick apart so the attention is deflected to circumstances beyond his control like a supporting cast.

Of course if he lands in the right situation like Miami, he may not have to worry about that either

The Heat would be instant contenders with BMW.

The Heat already have a playmaking 6'4/6'5 lightning quick guard.

Not to say they couldn't use another one, but Beasley by far is a better addition to that team as it's currently composed

Adding a 20+ PPG/ 10+ RPG guy in the post when they lack post play is the way to go

yeah i dont know about instant contenders but i think the playoffs are very realistic if wade is healthy and they have the potential to improve over time

rose is a great pg but i think is redundant with wade..he would look great in seattle or NY (if thats possible)

Rose is the better fit in Miami. They need a PG a heck of a lot more than they need another big man. Marion and Haslem are both PF's, either of the 2 or Beasley are gonna play center. Kepp Marion, draft Rose and a Rose, Wade, Marion combo would be sick.

For Miami I go with Beasley, definitely. Nothing against Rose, just a question of who is a better fit with Wade. Beasley, with his ability to score both inside and outside, is a really nice fit on an offense triggered by Wade's slashing. Rose not as much, because his jumper still needs work. With Wade/Rose/Marion backcourt, teams will just collapse the paint and dare these guys to hit jumpers.

I wouldn't worry so much about next season. Give Beasley a year to adjust to the league, and give Wade and Beasley a year to develop chemistry. Then land a nice draft pick, and roll into 2009-10 with Wade, Marion, Beasley at the 2-4.

I wouldn't worry about Haslem either. Nice player but hardly the kind of guy you build around. He can always be moved later for value, e.g. for a serviceable 1.

Beasley doesn't have that strength and athleticism combination that Amare has. He's a very quick player, but he'll struggle for awhile going against the real physical defenders inside. I think he'll benefit a little bit more from the additional spacing in the NBA game, but I think for a PF whose game is going to be predicated on the midrange game, he's not going to be all that efficient if he's asked to score 25 ppg.

Secondly, the only PF's imo that have played at a superstar level in the recent past have been KG and TD, and Elton Brand for that one year. There's been some other great PF seasons like Dirk last year and Amare this year, but neither bring much on the defensive end, and I think the same will hold for Beasley.

Miami would take Beasley over Rose.

I don't think people question his potential. They question his ability to reach his potential.

I think a good comparison his is AI or even Shaq. Iverson is an amazing physical speciman and talen. But he was so intent on doing things his way that he never listened to anyone. Did he accomplish some nice things in his career yes, but I'll be damned if he actually reached his potential. If you throw his final fluke appearance out you have the resume of guy who missed the playoffs an awful lot of times. I think thats what people see in Beasley and why I even suggest a guy like Lopez or Love should go ahead of him.

So do I think others will be the offensive talent that Beasley is, no but I do think they would be able to bring their positives without bringing the same negatives. Just go look back at the 1996 draft, there are a lot of guys whose careers you would take over Iverson's.
