Jason Kidd's D..
I found myself defending Jason Kidd's D after the trade, because A LOT of people on RealGM were talking about how he has regressed heavily on D and couldn't stay with anybody..
I've watched the last 5 Mavs games, even though I hate them almost as much as any other team..Kidd has been GREAT defensively, especially on help D..his defensive instincts have been on display since Dirk went down, and he's just looked great..
today was another great example of his great defense..shutting down Nash, including a few blocks on him..his help D was all over the place, resulting in a few steals as well..
the Mavs have looked a lot better since they started opening the floor up with Kidd leading the way, and he's looked better on both sides of the ball, especially defensively..
of course he can't keep up with Paul or Williams on an elite level, but who can?..was the decline talk too premature?..

The talk of Jason Kidd's decline on defense is an example of how things become exaggerated on real gm. Word gets out that he has declined on defense and soon enough everyone believes he has become a bad defender. He isn't as effective on defense as he used to be, but he is still a good defender. Considering how few good defenders there are at the pg position in the NBA now, Kidd is still one of the best defensive pgs in the league.

There is something to note though; Kidd's defense has declined. It is most noticeable against the smaller, athletic guards on whom he used to do a better job.
Against anyone 6'4 and over though, he's still a very talented defender and a lot of help defense is anticipation rather than athletic ability so he can still bring that. Moreover, he brings a defensive mentality and effort on that end, as well as vocal communication while on the floor and that's always important to the idea of team defense.
There are many facets to his defensive impact, some beyond what he does physically on the court.

Co-signed. Kidd's help defense is really phenomenal; with the Nets Kidd was often assigned to guard the opposing team's best swingman in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. He did so with quite a bit of success might I add.
It's funny how everyone said Harris was a better defender than J-Kidd but since Harris has come to the Nets the Nets have become a significantly better offensive team and a significantly worse defensive team... Now there are other factors at play, but Kidd doesn't just play defense, he coordinates his team's defense.

agree, but that's naturally going to happen with age..
I definitely find his "decline" overrated though, to the extent that many people were claiming..

Deron Williams > Jason Kidd in defense. Chri's Paul's personal killer, and compares to the shot blocking of the NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony.
Jason Kidd is average in general, and often does mediocre with star players on the other side. Lately has been playing well though, props to him for stepping up.

I don't think it's overrated. I think he has definitely lost a step especially when defending against the quick PGs of today's game (Calderon/Ford, Parker, Harris). I think it's two fold. First of all, people forget that he's 6'4. There's not a lot of 6'4 guards who can keep up with the Tony Parker's of the world. Heck there's a lot of 6'0 PGs who get burned by these guys.
Secondly, I thought J-Kidd's man-to-man defense has always been overrated anyway. He was never the elite man defender that someone like say, Gary Payton was. What Kidd was and still is, is a very smart defender. Pretty much his entire game is predicated on his basketball IQ, as he was never the most athletic person anyway. He knows how to position himself, he knows how to make smart and calculated gambles, and just has an overall good feel for the game.
But he has better success now going against the bigger guards. Heck, did you see Amare try to back Kidd down? He didn't budge one bit and Amare had to spin off him and try to beat him off the dribble. It's what allows him to gamble and switch on defense, because he can get caught on a switch and a mismatch and hold his own.
Not many guards can do that.

Kidd's D in their last game against the Lakers was horrid. The previous matchup he played solid D though.

Well I think you are asking two questions here: a) is Jason Kidd still a good defender and b) was the decline talk too premature.
The answer to (a) is yes. He's big and smart, won't get murdered on a switch and usually won't be targetted. However he certainly isn't elite. He can definitely get burned by smaller, quicker guards.
The answer to (b) is no. He has declined. There is no real question about it. He used to be the best point guard in the game, now he is borderline top 10... he is still a streak shooter but there are far too many nights where he is a legitimate liability in the halfcourt set. As far as declining on defense, he's definitely lost a step in man defense but after seeing him play hard in Dallas I can say with confidence that he was dogging it in NJ. He is playing a lot harder on D now than he was 2 months ago.

Kidd, when his heart was into it, post microfracture surgery was always a solid help defender and had success against players taller than him to a point, but to say that the team became worse defensively after he left and trying to make it look as if Harris has something to do with that is a tad bit dishonest NF, the team was already atrocious defensively even when Kidd was here, i really don't see any difference between the garbage defense as a whole the Nets have been playing pre or post trade.

Do remember that the spirit of my post was a rousing of support for Kidd. It's clear that he's lost some of his ability to guard the quicker guys but that he's still as good as ever on the bigger guards and as a help defender... and as a team defensive coordinator.

How is Kidd a ''Borderline top 10 PG'' ??
As I see it only(in no particular order):
Paul
D Williams
Nash
Billups
Davis(debatable)
Are ahead of him right now who else is ahead of him, Andre Miller?? Calderon?? Ford??
