The only way it could ever work is if a woman was granted an assistant's job for a few years and the core of the team respected her, and on that same team she became coach.
Unliekly, but the only scenario for which a woman can gain respect.
And for all those who keep spouting the same crap that it's a totally different game, it is still basketball. IF you are a great mind at one style of basketball, you can adapt with time and become a great mind at a different style.

Never would happen, IMO. In a league where a high % of players are either head cases or womanizers, there's no way that they would respect or listen to a woman coach.
While women may just be as capable to do anything a man can, there are certainly things they will never be allowed to do. It's the same reason why we won't have a woman president in 2008.
If you REALLY think a woman could coach in the professional league, what happens after the team goes on a losing streak? There's no way she'll be able to control a team of men who are, most likely, barely listening to her in the first place. The reason why many coaches are successful is because they are able to relate to the team not only because they used to play sports as well, but because they are men. Younger players need a man to look up to as a mentor, and veteran players need a coach to not only control the team and ego's, but respect the players as men.
This is why you'll never see a woman coach in the NBA, NFL or MLB.
