Worst top 3 picks ever

Post#1 » by WadeKnicks2010 » Mon Apr 7, 2008 4:48 pm

Collectively speaking, Is it 2006 (Bargnani, Aldridge, Morrison) without a doubt? Not one superstar. Two players still might not ever command over a MLE salary. Very little talent.

Other drafts have at least had one perennial all star caliber player in their top 3. Not this one. And the combined level of play from this top 3 is just awful relative to other top 3s.

That draft was the product of overhyping.

That draft was pretty weak (although I still will never forgive the selection of Shelden Williams). Everybody said that Roy would be the best player off the bat but they were worried about his knees and everybody knew that Gay had the best combination of natural talent + athleticism but he might never work hard enough to really shine. They should have been taken earlier but I can understand why you'd gamble on Bargs/LMA... Morrison and Thomas were a little easier to call (one has a terminal lack of athleticism and the other of skill, you can get guys like that later in the draft). Shelden was a terrible pick, retrospective second rounder. The top players came after that.

Was terrible for us all season, got traded to Sacto in the Bibby deal and is slightly less terrible but still pretty terrible.

It's a bit early to evaluate. LMA is a legit top 3 pick, and will be an all-star. Bargs is sucking right now but still shows flashes of potential. Adam Morrison is probably a bust.

Still, as stated above, I'd probably take the 2006 top 3 over the 2000 top 3 of KMart/Swift/Miles, if only for LMA.

Also, why stop at top 3? The 2006 top 5 was terrible:
1. Bargs
2. LMA
3. Morrison
4. Tyrus
5. Shelden

Edit: 1998 was a pretty bad year too
1. Olowokandi
2. Bibby
3. LaFrentz

Aldridge, as much as I think he's a wuss, has the potential to be an All Star. 2000's top 3 (top 4, actually) was abysmal. KMart, Stro, Miles, Fizer. 1998's sucked, too. Olowokandi, Bibby (not a superstar by your standards), LaFrentz. 1995: Smith, McDyess, Stackhouse. 1991: LJ, Anderson, Owens. 1989: Ellison, Ferry, Elliott. 1988: Manning, Smits, Smith. There've been plenty of drafts without a true superstar in the top 3.

^^1995 was good IMO.

McDyess was one hell of a player when he was younger and is pretty servicable nowadays.

Joe Smith has been a dissappointment for a number 1 but overall better than olowakandi, Lafrentz, Swift, Miles etc.

Jerry stackhouse has had an above average career. At one point avg 29 in a season(shooting it at 40% but nonetheless)

There is NO WAY 1995 should even be in consideration. Sure, Joe Smith has had a disappointing career, but the guy is solid as can be. Conversely, Stackhouse was one of the top scorers in the league a few years back and McDyess was a 20 and 10 beast before he was plagued with injuries. None of those guys are or were "superstars" but they were certainly a lot better than the other drafts mentioned.

You should as well. Stackhouse was a perennial all-star caliber player as was McDyess. That draft just doesn't deserve mention with the others.

Okay, fine, maybe McDyess was a perennial "all star caliber" player for several seasons. Stackhouse though was only all star caliber for two seasons. Anyway, you're right, McDyess fits the OP's criteria. That draft shouldn't have been mentioned.

1986 FTW:

1. Brad Daugherty
2. Len Bias
3. Chris Washburn

You have one solid (all-star) center trying to ruin it, but you also have a player who died of drug overdose before within a week of the draft, and a third player who was kicked out of the league for life for drugs after 72 NBA games. I don't think it gets any worse than that.

As an LSU fan, I didn't understand why everyone liked Tyrus over Gay, he was .5 inches taller, had 1 inch less vertical, same standing reach, Gay was heavier, more skilled at just about everything, more experienced...

Hell, Tyrus had 1 year less to play, but they were actually born on the same day!

It was two guys with virtually equal measurables across the board, same potential, yet 1 (Gay) was much closer to reaching that upside.

Daugherty the perennial all star caliber player alone ruins it, and Bias would've been a perennial all star. The Celtics did not make a mistake in choosing him as a player, he made a mistake in choosing coke as a person.

Well, 2 of the top 3 players played 73 combined nba games and the other had an 8 year career, and that's the facts. Bias probably would have been great, but he wasn't. Now Daugherty was a perennial all-star as the top pick in the draft, but I think that Aldridge has a chance to be the same type of player.

Please don't get too defensive about what I think just becasue the Celtics chose Bias. Maybe the coke thing should have been more well known by the teams before the draft. Same with Washburn.

Anyways, I'd rather get a role player who plays for eight years (like Kenyon Martin) than guys who never even get on the court. For this draft not to be considered bad top 3 wise, then Michael Jordan or Olojuwan better be in it.
