i was thinking the same thing when i read it earlier. if chris mullin didn't make it i'd be like w/e, but don nelson didn't make it? that's such bull :nonono:

This is terrible... I have to admit this was my greatest hope this offseason. What a great way to go out - an induction to the hall of fame.

I think now Nellie's definitely coming back... sad day for the franchise.

Now I have a question for you Nick (which btw I don't know the answer to):

How many NBA coaches are in the hall that never won a ring?

Maybe someone can help out with this one.

Well, he did ring a bunch of rings as a player before becoming the second-winningest coach in NBA history, but I guess that isn't enough for some people. Even if you have some hatred of Nellie because of how he has handled his rotations this year, you can't deny the fact that he has 40 years of nba experience has put his fingerprint on the game, which should make him a hall-of-fame member.

I realize that some people are very fond of Nellie and would like to see him get in, but I just don't think that longevity and a history of mediocrity should necessarily be enough to do it. I consider him to very similar in terms of his career to Wilkins (who it just so happens he will likely be eclipsing his record for most carreer wins) and who is in fact a HOFer. The biggest differences between the two imo is that Wilkins did finally win a ring, Nellie actually has a better overall winning %. I think the other difference between the two which is the ty breaker imo is that Wilkins was a guy that everyone liked and Nellie is probably a guy who most people don't like. As far as him not getting in, I'm just venting a little and eventually he should get in but I'm really glad he didn't make it this year (with the job he's done on us imo) and perhaps maybe it will give him something to think about next year since I know he wants it. It just bugs me when people try and defend him and some of his decisions by constantly using his "surefire" Hofer" status instead of just judging him on what he's doing at present.

The Believer is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT ! If they were lakers they'd have been in the HOF already ! I hope they can turn this into locker room chatter that turns into wins these last 5 games !

I've always been a fan of Dick Vitale. I was living in Michigan when he coached at the University of Detroit. Dick looked really goofy back then when he wore his thick-rimmed-bottle glasses. Even back during the late 1970s, he had the ability to talk and convince people in believing in him as a coach. He was able to jump from coaching the University of Detroit straight into the NBA with the Pistons. Vitale tried to coach the Pistons like they were a college team. He was able to draft players he coached in college and others who played in the state of Michigan. Bob Lanier hated to play for Vitale and was instrumental in getting him fired early in his second season. Vitale talked himself all the way into the Naismith Hall of Fame--just like he did 30 years ago when was selected to coach the Detroit Pistons.

Nellie will eventually get selected, but I'm not too sure about Mullin.

If anything, Mully should go. The basketball hall-of-fame takes into account college, pro and international careers. Maybe if was only pro he wouldn't make it, but in college he was a 3-time Big East POY, 3 time ALl-American and won the Wooden Award for College POY in '85. On top of that, he has won two Olympic Gold Medals. While Don deserves to go in as a coach, Mullin is probably more worthy as a player.
