1980

Reading this thread makes me feel old as hell but it also let's me know why we get a bunch of the comments that make no sense. People simply not old enough to remember the Golden Age of Basketball and the differences between the game we watch today, and the game that was watched only a couple decades ago.

Starting in 1985-1986 (Spud Webb wins the Slam Dunk Championship; Jordan scores 63 points in the 1st round, Bird wins MVP, Ewing's rookie season; the original Twin Towers, Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson, make their first and only appearance together in the Finals; and much to the crushing disappointment of every kid who didn't live in the New England area, the evil Boston Celtics win the title) I followed the NBA vicariously through CBS and the box scores in the morning paper. But thankfully, the league soon expanded to my city and gave me my own hometown team to root for in 1988. And I've been watching religiously ever since.

Around 85. I'm very happy I got to see the Big 3 in action, I just wish I had more memories from our last title. :(

early 90s when i was around 10.. i would love watching the nba on nbc every sunday, that theme song was by far my favorite jingle, really gets me in the mood to go play ball... started out a sonics fan cuz i loved the green jerseys while playing Bulls vs blazers on my genesis (ricky peirce could do no wrong!)... was a fan up until the finals loss to the bulls, then really started watching teh home town nets when they got sam i am, van horn, jason williams, kendal gill etc ... i remember seeing them on the cover of Slam magazine reading about how they would become the next great dynasty, thats when i got hooked for real

in the 90's i didn't really follow and i did not have a real team to cheer, even not the lakers or the suns when i lived in la and phx,
i started to support the rockets in 2004/05 and since then i can say i started to watch nba and become a real fan of my team.

The first NBA game I watched was 87 finals.
Then I was casual fan (only watching finals) for years until 99 where I watch a game per day.

Hmm... in a purely technical sense, out of the womb. My grandfather once told me that the first game I watched was the last game of the '85 Finals.

I first REMEMBER basketball around the 88 season... which is awesome, because that may be the best year basketball has ever seen.

The first two games I ever caught were in the late 80's and both happened to involve Cleveland so Brad Daugherty was my favorite player. Then I didn't watch basketball for a few years (never had cable).

In 94, I caught the playoffs and Hakeem blew me away. I became a big fan of his though not having cable still limited me to boxscores for the most part.

When the raptors joined the league, I became hooked on basketball though it took a few years for it to surpass baseball and hockey as my favorite sports. I was also a big Grizzlies fan when they were in Vancouver (I'm not usually the patriotic type but in their case, there was always an us against them feeling to the team).
