agree, Kobe did not play the best D of his career that game. Roy blown by him couple of plays at the end. Farmar plays some stupid basketball, Gasol was not alive in the past few min og the game.

Shaw has a great point and this from a player who as never a lock down defender.

Absolutely our biggest issue is perimiter defense. The Last game , Kobe was digging in but he was playing Roy too tight. Which allowed them to work him off screens and easy crossovers.

The backcourt needs to communicate all times and guys like Fisher and Farmar need to stay in from of their man, call out screens, switch and just play hard at all times even if the Farmars and Fishers are not the best defenders... like Shaw was.

Our guards have to stay home on their defenders and dont play zone against the jump shooters. Kobe roams to much and Fisher sags too much, leaving wide open 3's.

Just play hard and communicate and the team can get stops. Its not going to be done by one player everynight.

They sag too much, but that's not my biggest worry. I'd live with the perimeter shots all day, as long as they're not completely uncontested.

What's worse to me is that despite sagging, they let any token wing player drive right by them almost as if they're not responsible, thus putting our bigs in tough situations. This causes early foul trouble for our bigs, leaving them tentative for the rest of the game. The other team notices this and becomes the aggressor and ends up winning tight games by virtue of being the aggressor.

We need Ariza and Bynum in a really bad way. Right now. I'm very disappointed in how Phil hasn't been able to correct this problem during the last three years here. Every game, it's the same story. We won't win rings unless we start holding teams to 80-90 ppg.

Brandon Roy is a terrific player. He just burned Kobe a few times. With the ball, he's devastating. Kobe, Ginobili, and Roy are probably the best guards in the league with their ability to break defenses down in the halfcourt, and get any shot they want. Kobe just got beat on several plays. When Kobe went under the screen, Roy just stepped back and hit the jumper. He's talented.

The more consistent problem has been the other guard and wing defenders. The constant weakness has really been the point guard. Fisher just doesn't have the ability to stay in front of his man, which is why he tends to get into foul trouble. Farmar doesn't have the length or strength to bother his opponent - he's not a good on-the-ball defender. His defensive strengths lie in playing the passing lanes for steals. These guys need to stop the ball, and they have trouble doing it. The best player on our team who can pressure the opposing point guard is Sasha Vujacic, but he seems to be playing the 2-3 this year.

Regarding our team defense, without Bynum, it puts a lot of pressure on our guards to do a lot more. There's no funneling option whatsoever, because our bigs aren't going to protect the basket as well as Bynum.

Pick and roll defense is poor as well because our bigs don't show, chase, and rotate. Radmanovic is a major culprit, since when he meets a screen, he stops playing. Won't fight through it, won't chase, won't rotate. Radmanovic is a major reason why the team defense breaks down, because in a series of rotations, his is frequently late.

Gasol is just slow on the rotation, and he generally gets caught in traffic. He's not quick to the ball on defense at all.

Odom is quicker, but his tendency is to play the rebound rather than contest the shot, and his defense around the basket consists mostly of raising his arms and stand straight up to avoid foul trouble.

It's a good challenge from Shaw, but if we really wanted to boost the defense, we should put in Sasha to pressure the opposing point guard, and we should play Turiaf more to protect the basket.

The Laks defense suck, other teams always have a extra guy outside the paint waiting for the penetration before the pentration, but the Laks never use this. It's most effective against LB and Kobe. Instead, they wait for the guards to attack then react. We need to set the defense before the guards attack. Our guards should harass the opponent so he would have to do somthing quick, while a big man wait right outside the paint. It's ok for Kobe to over play the guard as long as we have someone waiting outside the paint.

They played good defense against the Clippers, last night. Under 80 points. Just what the Doctor ordered. Do it again tonight (at least under 95), and I'm back on the contender band-wagon.
