...Even if CP3 has a penchant for gambling on D and byatching at the refs after every other play he's still a much better defender than Rondo.

Even as a Celtics fan, I've gotta say that Rondo selection is a bit of a reach.

Chris Paul, New Orleans. The Hornets have defended better with him on the bench, but his league-leading 2.7 steals per game and quick feet make him a contributor at the defensive end in addition to his terrific offense.

Paul can get beat and he doesn't always kill himself on D - nor should he. I have watched the Cs a bit this season but haven't focused on Rondo, I know he has the rep of a good defensive guard and the fact that I didn't see him get torched too often leads me to believe he might be legit.

Beyond that, I like this list. He isn't looking at the stars who play good D. He's looking at good defenders period.

All defensive teams are not selected by position. There aren't many good defensive point guards in the league, and neither Paul nor Rondo should be on either of the all defensive teams over better defenders because they play pg.

Basileus, that wasn't the point; he WAS breaking it down by position and creating a team of defenders in that fashion.

sherk , what are your thoughts of Paul possibly being on the 1st team all-d, solely based on leading the league in steals, which is what I think he'll get in because of; a la Larry Hughes in 04ish.

Very good comparison: I also think CP3 getting All-Defense First Team recognition this year would be Hughes-like.

Paul is better defensively than Hughes. 1st Team would still be a travesty but he's still a lot more useful than Larry Hughes. Paul is a solid defender but he's maybe 3rd Team or as suggested in the article, honorable mention.

Too bad All-Defense Third Team doesn't exist.

It's not a reach at all. Chris Paul gets recognition because he gets many steals, but no point guard in the league is better at defense than Rajon Rondo. Ridiculously long arms, extremely quick feet, able to shut down pretty much anybody. He's the clear-cut first team selection in my opinion.

Kevin Garnett has defended this year like Pedro Martinez pitched in '99/00.
There isn't a chance in hell KG isn't the DPOY.

Steals and Block don't mean anything.

A well contested shot and securing the rebound has the same effect. You just need good anticipation on the ball to block or steal. The ball is only going to go up on a shot, and the ball is either going to out there for you to steal when you're stealing the ball. Playing good defense on a guy is different. The guy can pump fake, drive right, drive left or just straight up J in your face.

No Kobe? :nonono:

Kobe has played arguable the best defense of his career this season and is definitely 1st Team All-Defense.
