Stathead question: the "average" player?

Post#1 » by loserX » Thu Apr 10, 2008 8:00 pm

Just a silly curiosity on my part, but wondering if any of you smart fellers can help:

I'm curious as to who the most "average" player in the NBA was this year. Statistically, which player was the closest to getting the leaguewide average for '07-08 PPG, RPG, APG, and any other stat you want to throw in. Is there a site that tracks such averages?

Thanks in advance!

Go to www.basketball-reference.com and look for a guy with a PER of exactly 15.0.

Thanks, guys...very interesting, although a bit hard to believe that Mekhmet Okur, who beats Sam Cassell in almost every single stat on the board except assists and FT%, has the same PER. Oh well :)

Rather than using PER, I used bb-ref's league average stats here, and worked it out to get the average per-40 numbers of an NBA player. I came up with:

Points: 16.7

FGM: 6.2 FGA: 13.6 FG%: .457

3PT: 1.1 3PA: 3.0 3P%: .367

FT: 3.2 FTA: 4.2 FT%: .756

ORB: 1.9 DRB: 5.1 TRB: 7.0

AST: 3.6 STL: 1.2 BLK: 0.8

TOV: 2.4 PF: 3.5

Closest that I can find to a 16.7/7/3.6 guy minutes-adjusted is...

Marvin Williams: 17.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.5 blocks.

He also happens to be one of your guys at exactly 15.0 in PER, invalidating my last ten minutes spent trying to find a 'more average' player.

Doesn't NBA.com name each year's "average player" at the end of the season? I think a couple of years back it was Jason Richardson, though I could be mistaken (and likely am since JRich has been well above average for a while now).

No that was the average body of an NBA player.
My Starting 5:

PG: Allen Iverson
SG: Paul Pierce
SF: Kevin Durant
PF: Kevin Garnett
C: Patrick Ewing

Oh yeah, that was it. My bad. I knew JRich couldn't have been the "average player."

I don't see how J-Rich is the "average body" either, but of course they're only taking about height/weight right? He's definitely tops in jumping ability.

Build-wise this year it's James Jones.

Last year I know one of the ESPN guys said Anthony Parker was the most average player in the league. Don't know about this year.

I wonder where does this leave the Miami heat?
