Kevin Garnett/Scottie Pippen

Post#1 » by RelativeZdot » Fri Apr 11, 2008 4:28 am

This is one ive been thinking about for sometime. Both good 2way players. Garnett has mvp hardware. Pippen has the rings. Who would you take to start a franchis? Who has/had the better career?

You take KG to start a team. He is more efficient. As for career, it's has to be Pippen, however it depends on how much you value winning as the 2nd best player on your team as well.

Pippen. He was a winner. He went toe-to-toe with all time greats and won (i.e. Magic). Greatest perimiter defender of all time. Don't talk about teamates either. 1994 Bulls should have won it all if not for Hue Hollins.

Huh!!

Garnett and Jordan would have won more titles than MJ and Pippen because it didn't take as long for KG to develop as it did for Pippen.

And what is this that Pippen went toe-to-toe with all time greats? He didn't win as the best on the team.

As far as 1994 where is this myth? The Knicks that year struggled against everyone. They went 7 against the Bulls, 7 against the Pacers and were down 3-2 in that series and should have lost game 7 if not for the blatant fragrant called on Reggie in the last 1 minutes.

Well logistically getting either KG or Pip with MJ as a rookie.. a PF and SG combo should be better then a SG and SF combo.

But Scot and MJ had Rodman's rebounding, wich is just as good as Garnett who lead the league in rebounding for what 4/5 years in a row?

Idk if CHI could find a roleplayer at the SF postion to make up for Rodman.

Jordan and Pippen only had Rodman for three of those championships. I'm sure if Garnett was on the team they'd find a servicable SF. Hell, in the last threepeat they had Kukoc.

I'm going with Garnett.

One of the tougher comparisons I've seen. I think I have to sort of cop out and say it depends on the situation.

Garnett, easily.

The only thing Pippen's got on him are rings.

In a top 50, I'd put Garnett in the top 20-25.
Pippen goes in the 30's somewhere, on my top 50 anyway.
I don't find his career to be much better than, say, McHale's.

I thought that Kobe and Garnett could work well because KG is like a giant version of Pippen with better leadership skills (I know Scottie was a great winner but there were times when his leadership were in serious question).

I love Pip but I'd take KG pretty easily in this one.

I'd take Pippen personally.

Pippen is a legitimate lock down perimeter defender. Garnett is no slouch himself but per their position Pippen was a better wing defender than KG is a defender down low. Pippen was also the prototypical point forward and was a winner.

What happened to the Bulls when Jordan took nearly 2 years off? Pippen took them to game 7 of the second round against a very good Knicks team and took them to the 2nd round the next year (with a rusty Jordan playing few games). What happened if KG didn't have a "great" supporting cast of players around him? He couldn't even make the playoffs. With the exception of his final year with the Bulls (when he was waaaaaay past his prime), Pippen's team made the playoffs every year he played. As much as some will pin that on playing with great players it still says a lot about Pippen.

Pippen. I can't believe how may people take Garnett on this. Pippen was a perfect compliment and was probably a top 3 defender for 10 years. I think people tend to undervalue Pip because he played with Jordan and people give KG great credit because he played on such terrible teams.

so you'll start a franchise with a compliment player?

Pippen is the most overrated player of all time on these boards. Plus he's a baby who quit on his team. Give me Garnett any day.

I'm a huge Pippen fan, but this is KG pretty easily for me. He would be so much easier to build around.

Garnett came in, and in 2 years, age 21, he was Kevin Garnett. Scottie Pippen took 3 years to become Scottie, at age 25.

Not only that, but Pippen was definitely an elite complimentary player, but only a "good" top option, in his prime. Garnett was the "man" on a contending team. That's really the dealbreaker for me.

I love, love Scottie, but I'll take Garnett.

Err, you realize in that in 94-95, the Bulls were 34-31 before Jordan came back and then went on a 13-4 run during the games in which he participated, yes?

The Bulls were playing just above .500 without Jordan that year.

Yeah, the year before they looked really good because they had a rookie Kukoc, they'd acquired Kerr and they'd also got career years out of Pippen and Grant but they had some clear weaknesses. Yes, they were impressive but teams figured them out before Jordan returned, it was sort of a magical outlier season from them.

What happened if KG didn't have a "great" supporting cast of players around him? He couldn't even make the playoffs.

There's about a decade of proof to the contrary, with KG making the WC playoffs mostly surrounded by trash. You have no clue about Garnett's pre-Boston career, do you?

yea, kg def gets hated on unfairly for his playoff resume. The one time he actually had a team, he was mvp, got them to the western conference finals, and then played like an mvp in order to make the series competitive against the lakers, who not only had shaq and kobe, but had a great one on one defender at the 4 in karl malone. (if i remember right, he had a 30/20 game and facilitated most of the offense because of cassell's injury.)

scottie pippen is awesome, and was one of the best all around players ever, but kg is like a big man version of pippen. he's also somebody you can build a team concept around (defensive oriented, halfcourt high post/low post facilitator) i take kg.
