Cookie not expected back for 1st Round

The Orlando Magic don't expect injured power forward Brian Cook to play in the first round of the playoffs, which will likely begin next Sunday in Orlando.

Coach Stan Van Gundy said Friday that Cook "probably will not" be available.

Cook has been on the injured list since April 1 and has missed the past five games. He was ruled out for the regular season after sustaining a broken bone in his right hand during a practice incident with center Dwight Howard.

Howard was trying to steal the ball and slapped down on Cook's hand.

"He has on a hard cast and then still has to get a soft cast," Van Gundy said.

While Van Gundy said it wasn't "definite" that Cook would miss the first round, it is more likely he would be available for all, or a portion, of the second round if the Magic advance.

I'm not surprised, as stated, he's not even in a soft cast yet.[/quote]

He's giving Air Garrity a chance to average 20 points in the 1st Round.

Yes, Garrity would be a disaster. As bad for rebounding as it is having three guards in the 9 man rotation, it is better than having Garrity play. Will a rotation of Bogans, Arroyo, Dooling and Foyle be enough?

That is tough. Philly has a lot of active big men, I'm not sure we can small ball them to death. I think the answer may be in playing Foyle more minutes than usual and going with a 3 big man rotation. Puts people under pressure to not get into foul trouble, but anything that keeps Garrity off the floor.

You mean Dwight and Foyle on the floor together? Rebounding woes would disappear for sure. Would that also move Turk to the 2 with Shard at the 3? It seems good to me, though it goes against the teams philosophy of putting only shooters around Dwight this year. SVG is the man and I trust he'll make the right call based on the match ups.

Give Foyle more minutes?

Only in the context of foul trouble, giving up fouls, or desperation.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

Garrity has gotten a little better as his minutes have increased. Not say he is great but I think he is capable to hold his own. I hope this means more minutes for Auggie. I don't get why he doesn't get more regular min. For the most part Auggie has show the ability to hold his own on the rebounding and Defensive end when he has received minutes. Granted the minutes were in garbage time. But I think he can be an asset in the playoffs. But overall the magic can survive without Cook.

Maybe offensively but defensively watching him is like living on the edge of a disaster. He is going to give viewers heart attack, I cannot even imagine what his teammates are thinking playing next to him.

But overall the magic can survive without Cook.
I think one big reason Magic couldn't finish the season strong is the loss of Cook. A lot of times, Van Gundy and the players themselves made strong comments about the lack of defense. The defense is very important during the playoffs and Howard is not enough. I am not saying Cook is great, but, without him you either have no other option or you have Garrity, whichever you prefer (for me they are not a lot different).

Its too late to change the lineup now... we cant play 80 games with Lewis at PF and then change it with 2 games to go... we will have to go with this lineup for better or worse, if we get down in the series maybe then there will be changes, but nothing much will change for the first 2 playoff games IMO.
