so according to the logic from a lot of posters in the MVP thread in the GB, if the spurs win #1 seed = Ginobili MVP, if Houston wins top seed = Tmac is MVP, if Lakers finish ahead = Kobe MVP and if NO pulls it off = Paul MVP. yeah, amizing is happenning.

That's correct if all three teams win out Rockets can't leap frog the Hornets because in the SW division Houston is 8-8 and the Hornets can't do worse than 10-6. So it doesn't matter if Houston owns the tiebreaker against the Lakers for them to be number 1 they need to have the tiebreakers against both the Lakers and the Hornets. And they don't have it against the Hornets.

in case anyone hasn't looked into it themselves.

it doesn't seem to be updated since it says that the 3 division winners get the top 3 spots. as we know, that rule was changed and the division winners are only guaranteed a top 4 spot.

Nope, Houston has played one less game then as so far, which is why we have a .5 game lead, so if we both win out, then we'll both have the same record and the tie breaker goes to Houston. But if the Hornets win out then the Rockets can't be any higher then 3rd if I'm correct.

^^ Thats what I thought it was.

If Houston would be under New Orleans no matter what, and if New Orleans ends up below the Lakers, wouldnt that mean Lakers > Houston?

yeah, since a hornets/rockets would be tied for the division title, their tie would need to be broken first, which goes to the hornets. then the hornets would be tied with the lakers, with that going to the lakers. if the hornets lose again and rockets/lakers win out, the rockets take the division AND number one seed since they own the head to head tie breaker with the lakers. i think thats how it is.

go hornets!

can someone who is more familiar with the current rules please tell me whats wrong with my scenario:

lakers/rockets/hornets are all 57-25.

in this scenario, the rockets and hornets are obviously tied for the division too, so that tie needs to be broken first. hornets have the tie breaker and win the division. doesn't that only guarantee a top 4 seed?

now theres still a 3 way tie lakers/rockets/hornets with the lakers and hornets guaranteed a top 4 spot, along with the jazz. this 3 team tie goes to the rockets, by virtue of better combined head to head record. so rockets take the number one seed.

lakers then own the tie breaker over the hornets. lakers take number two.

hornets take number 3.

You already answered your question with the info in this post and your previous post. Since the Hornets own the tie breaker, then the Rockets are automatically below them and anybody else above them. The Rockets can not finish ahead of the Hornets under these circumstances. And since the Lakers own the tie breaker with the Hornets, we end up on top, even though Houston owns the tie breaker between us, since they have to finish below the Hornets.

Well if KingLakers is right, then nevermind my post. Can someone give an actual link to the rule changes for the playoffs.

eh, basically the lakers don't control their own destiny. lakers could win out but if the rockets win their division outright they leapfrog the lakers.

i posted a link to the rules. what he forgot to mention was that ties for a division title must be broken first.

again, thats what my question is about. the rules say that the division title winners must be determined first so the hornets would take it over the rockets. now, those that simply mean the hornets are guaranteed a top 4 spot or does that also mean the rockets get bumped out of the tie breaker scenario making it a hornets/lakers only tie?

edit: kingslakers erased his post. i look crazy now, lol.

But Houston winning outright is less likely because it seems more likely that all three finish with identical records so wouldn't that still give the Hornets the division title because of their better record in the division.

Okay, now that I see the rules, I see what you're actually asking. I think your original idea is right, except we might be the third seed overall in that scenario, since we have the worst combined head to head match-ups, but I'm not sure. Man, all this stuff is confusing, screw it, let someone else figure it out, lol.

If the Lakers win sunday they clinch the 2 seed thats from sundays LATimes. The more than 2 team tiebreaker only applies to three teams with identical records that are in three different divisions since the Hornets and Rockets are in the same division that tie breaker won't come into effect first the division must have a winner if both the Rockets and Hornets win out Hornets will take the division and the two seed while the Lakers will take the one seed and the Rockets will settle for third seed.At least that's what I get from reading the rules.

that can't be right. lakers could still lose their last game putting them at 26 losses while if the rockets and hornets win out they'd be at 25 losses making the lakers the 3rd seed.

The Times must have gotten that from somewhere I guess they expect the Lakers to beat the Kings and looking at 2 out of 3 of the Lakers and Kings last games against each other you can't blame them to think that way.

Basically, provided we take our last two, Houston has no shot at the No. 1 seed if...

A. The Hornets win both of their last two games.

And/or

B. The Rockets lose one of their last three games.

It's a relative long-shot, considering the Hornets play the Clippers and the Mavs in a game they'll have nothing to play for, while the Rockets play tonight at Denver in a game the Nuggets absolutely have to have, followed by Utah (36-4 at home) tomorrow and finally the Clips. In essence, you're looking at hitting a five-game parlay, which is very hard to do.

I haven't read this officially, but it makes sense following the general tie-breaker rules the pro leagues follow.
