To build around this year, I'd take Duncan, his impact on both ends of the floor in terms of anchoring your offense and defense is unmatched.
For the future, you have to take Bron though, he's probably a better overall player at this stage and in the future with Duncan set to decline and (gulp) LeBron improving you have to take him.

The two posters who say "for this year I take Duncan, for the future I take LeBron" were not included in the totals since the OP says you must choose one to compete this year AND into the future, letting you weigh those factors the way you think best.

It's still easy. This year is uhh...lemme see...one year. The future is all the rest of the years ever. LeBron can probably play at a high level 8 or so of those infinite years so... 8 is more than 1.

On the other hand, you could be the Miami Heat . . . one year a rooster, the next a feather duster (to quote somebody who I can't remember)

i take duncan this year and the future, he can still hold down the teams defense and offense, with the correct players around him, even if he has to play 2nd or 3rd fiddle to the young players.
Even if it was straight out of HS/college draft at 22/23 years old to a teenybopper lebron, i still take duncan out of college.
