Is EE back?
Great post. I agree on most everything. I do think we need to play better perimeter defense, but defense is always a yin-yang thing to me. Team defense to me is a dynamic between smalls and bigs, and while I think our guards do need to exert more defensively, our bigs haven't helped out as much as they should, and the communication is poor too, as seen by exasperated looks after a defensive lapse. Many times the late rotation is committed by our bigs, and the help is sometimes non-existent.
I would say we could play better defense, but I really think Bynum needs to come back for us to become an elite defensive team. Personally, I think we don't have the personnel to do that right now, even though we might play great defense for a quarter or maybe even a half. Possibly give Turiaf and Sasha more minutes, to protect the basket and pressure the opposing PG, respectively. Otherwise, I think the best way to play consistent defense is to be disciplined offensively, prevent fastbreaks for the opponent, and communicate better on defense. Is it good enough to beat San Antonio, Boston and Detroit? I don't think so. Hopefully, Bynum comes back by at least the Conference Finals.
Great point about 3-point shooting - it should never be a first option, but there are quite a few players on our team that don't agree. In almost every case, everybody is so much better when they catch and shoot in rhythm rather than pulling up early.
Can't wait until Bynum comes back.
