Payton Doesn't Want To See Jersey Retired In OKC
April 14, 2008 - 4:42 pm
The Seattle Times -
Gary Payton was in attendance on Sunday night when the Sonics hosted what could turn out to be their final home game in the Northwest, according to the Seattle Times.

If Payton had retired before the season he could have had his jersey (#20) lifted into the rafters at KeyArena, but now he's worried about what a move might mean.

"I sure don't want to get my jersey retired in Oklahoma City," Payton said. "I don't think that would work for me. That ain't where I played. Oklahoma City fans didn't get to really, really see me. They saw me on TV, but that was it."

"My fans are here in Seattle. It would be nice for me to come back and raise my jersey in Seattle here and let everybody appreciate it and my family can appreciate it," he added. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/s ... en14x.html

Love these guys. I'd love it even more if OKC tried to retire them and they declined.

Just like he said, he's a Seattle Supersonic and has nothing to do with OK City.

Kinda wish they'd have been willing to help out with SOS to get the word out amongst the locals...people may not root for the Sonics like they once did, but everyone remembers Kemp and GP.

^Agreed but I understand his position. I never expected him to come out to the last game like he did. The minute I saw him, it put me to tears. It would have made an even bigger statement had Shawn joined him.

Maybe we'll see him get more involved now..who knows.
