BSPN votes for MIP
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=MIP-0708
Are you freakin kidding me?
Three votes for Rondo, and none for Aldridge?!! One vote for Bynum who played 35 games this season?

The sight of 19 KG faces and one lone Josh Smith...

I have no problem with Hedo getting the votes. It's the votes for Rondo and Bynum that bug me. It reeks of typical east coast/big market bias.

Rondo went from being one of the worst-shooting PGs in the league to having an above-average midrange shot, in one year. He went from being a rookie role player on one of the worst teams in the league to being the starting PG for the best team in the league, in one year. He's going to get serious consideration for an All-Defense 1st team nod. That's not East Coast bias. Personally, he's not in my top 3 for MIP...but it's not crazy to vote for him.

He also has the benefit of playing with KG, Piece, and Allen.
Looking at this from a statistical perspective, here are the increases by the sophomores in consideration:
Rondo: +4.2pts, + 1.3asts, +.1 to, +.5rbs in + 6:23 mins.
Gay: +9.4pts, +.6asts, +.5to, +1.6rbs, in + 10:12 mins.
Aldridge: +8.9pts, +1.2asts, +1to, +2.6rbs, in +12:41 mins.

I don't neccesarily think Aldridge improved that much, he really just got more PT and almost 8 more shots a game. He was actually putting up some nice numbers to end the year last season. He averaged 15 PPG, 52% FG, 8 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 30 MPG in the 15 games to end the season.
I'd put the other guys, Dunleavy, Hedo, and Paul over him. Rudy was a rookie like Aldridge, so they should improve, but I think he had more improvement than just minutes and shots in comparison to LaMarcus.
Bynum is actually the most improved if he didn't play just 35 games. I don't know why David West is in there, that's actually the worst pick, and yes Rondo probably should not be in there either.

- There is more to analysis than a statistical perspective.
- The big stat jump you're looking for is dampened by playing with the Big 3. You're talking about three stars who get most of the touches, who can create shots for themselves, who are above average playmakers and rebounders at their positions.
- You're only looking at raw counting stats, anyway. Aldridge's per minute production and rates in crucial categories declined this year, actually.

wasn't Kaman drafted 6th overall in his draft? and MD, Jr was selected 3rd or so, right?
maybe im confused...

I mean i'm not saying he should win, but man at least 1 wote.
He went from being a 3min per game player if any, to a legit starter in this league, if thats not improvement i don't know what is.
+1
06/07: 4.7 ppg/1.7 apg
07/08: 12.7 pgg/4.3 apg
increased his FG% and 3PT% as well.

This was my first thought as well, but then I figured he was going more with the whole "AND expected to be stars" thing. Dunleavy was hoped to be a very solid player, but not a star. Paul, Williams, etc were all hoped and expected to be MVP type players.

Well all the guys you mentioned were high draft picks except for Hedo, so not really.
Actually Kaman was expected to be good, and if you go back to the 05-06 season, he was on the path to being this kind of player. Early injuries just derailed him in 06-07, which is part of why his production suffered. Now the place where he did improve a lot is his shot blocking, but I wonder how much of that has to do with not having Brand patrolling the paint also and blocking some of the shots he was blocking this season.
