If Sonics gets Beasley, Sonics vs Blazers?

Post#1 » by Action Paxson » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:00 am

Looking at the Sonics they could potentially be the Blazers one year ago. They have the rookie of the year (Durant looks like he will be a top 10 player) and in position to get another stud. If the Sonics get Michael Beasley what core/situation would you rather have?

I figure most people will say Portland because of the overall depth of their young players, but the combo of Durant/Beasley could be overwhelming.

Keep in mind the Sonics have big cap space coming up next off-season with guys like Okafor and Gordon talking QO. Portland also has a lottery pick this season.

I know its early and hypothetical but its fun to talk about. My roommate and I were talking about and couldn't really decide. I consider Portland to have the most enviable situation in the league but would a Durant/Beasley duo trump that?

I pick Portland over Seattle. They've got the big man and the point locked up, which goes a long way towards building a championship team.

I don't know if Portland has the most enviable situation in the entire league though.

I'll take a "once in a decade" big man, a high post PF twin tower combo with a second year do it all all star SG over 2 high volume scoring SF's and a defensive oriented SF if I'm looking to build a dynasty...but I'm also a Blazer fan, so take that for what its worth.

Summer of 09 Portland is looking to have about 20 some million in cap space to offer a Free Agent. While Seattle has money that year as well, it won't be the same amount, and getting a free agent to go to a team in discourse, let alone a place in the NW (this affects both teams) might be difficult.
Thank you for all the memories BRoy. You were a class act and brought hope to an entire region for 5 years. You will be missed.

If I'm Seattle and I get the #1 pick, I take Derrick Rose.

I think Toronto Raptors and their improvement of Rasho Nesterovic into Top 10 players will make them instantaneously Shaqobe type of powerhouse.

I don't consider Portland to have the most enviable situation in the league. Oden hasn't played a single game and he's injury prone. They aren't in the playoffs. Id take the Hornets, Jazz, Lakers situation over them easy and im sure theres more.

I'd take Rose unless I was able to get good value by trading Green. The Sonics don't need another SF/PF tweener when they spent two top picks on them last year.

You mean going the Atlanta route isn't a good idea?!?

I think a lot of this depends on how the #1 pick turns out and whether Oden stays healthy or not. I don't understand how some people can just dismiss his injury concerns? He's had problems in high school/college and before he steps on an NBA court he has a season ending injury..

I don't know how good Beasley will be in the playoffs. We assume too much right now. We don't even know how good Oden will be. We have to just wait and see.

I wouldn't really consider Beasley a 3/4 tweener. He has very rare perimeter skills for a big man but he certainly has the size and rebounding ability to play PF in the NBA.

Rose probably makes more sense - there is Seattle or Oklahoma's Payton replacement.

If they get #2, they don't have to choose!

I see Beasley being like Derrick Coleman but I just don't see him meshing all the well with the Sonics. I think their biggest concern would be at the point and the Sonic should get Rose but I would still consider Portland a significantly better team with more potential.

I think Beasley and Durant would compliment each other well. Really in the future I could imagine Green, Beasley, and Durant rotation along the front line.

If the Sonics have cap space after next year perhaps they go PG now and go another year with Wilcox and Collison. They have many ways to go because despite being a pretty bad team they have a good amount of talent.

I agree, Rose with Durant and Green on the wing is sick.

Seattle would pick Rose. Or trade down if they get the #1 pick. They don't need Beasley.
