Frannie update or just old news?

Post#1 » by Ktron » Thu Apr 17, 2008 4:43 am

Remember Fran Vazquez? Orlando's 2005 first-round pick (No. 11) who passed on the NBA to remain in Europe? While many fans are salivating at the prospect of pairing Vazquez with Dwight Howard next season, they might want to temper that excitement. "He's terrible," said an NBA international scout who has seen the FC Barcelona forward play recently. "Not bad, terrible. He's actually doing [Magic GM] Otis Smith a favor by staying overseas. He can't play at all."

Yikes, anyone seen him play recently? Is he really that bad?[/url]

I really hope we keep Marcin. Didnt watch the game, but he looked like a beast tonight on the Boxscore.

He really did play an excellent game. It was against the wiz second unit but impressive nonetheless.

Fran's actually shown some improvement over the last three or four weeks as the Euroleague playoffs have come around. He was appalling in the regular season, but in the playoffs he really stepped up, culminating in a 15 point, 13 board, 2 assist, 2 block, 2 steal effort in Barcelona's last game (they lost in the semis). Overall in that semi final series he averaged 8.3ppg, 8.3rpg, 1apg, 1bpg and 0.7spg.

Stats are much less of an indicator of a players ability in European basketball, but his general play was vastly improved in March against the rest of the year. Of course, that could just have been a purple patch, and he'll go back to being awful next season......

I don't see any problems in bringing him over. Augustine and Garrity won't be back next season, and if it turns out he is awful, he will just end up getting butt splinters like them, and heading back to Spain once his rookie deal is up.

With the Dollar falling against the Euro that buyout clause Fran has is getting bigger and bigger. The Magic are not allowed to pay it and considering it's about 25 million I don't see them forking out that kind of cash for a player that has shown to be getting worse rather then better with more experience.
So I would say that all said and done Fran won't be coming over here all too soon if ever. Unless you have some spare change lying around Mitchell UK so that Fran can buy out of his contract.

Last I read in the Spanish newspaper Marca, the buyout was 7million euros, or roughly $11million, which is huge, but the newspaper also reported that Barcelona were getting a new coach who was keen to clear out the current roster and build his own, and they were open to negotiating the buy-out fee down. Either way, you're right, a lot of $$$$ for a guy who has been pretty poor this year.

I wish!!! Trust me, if I had that kind of moolah, I wouldn't be spending it on Fran Vasquez's contractual freedom!

well barcelona is getting ettore messina but they have an aging marconato and mario kasun inside so retaining fran is a strong posibility because the other two suck balls too, but are older and not spanish.
Its a shame we all wont be able to witness this epic battle between vasquez and bustnani, it would be like the south park episode where timmy and jimmy fight each other.
And we owe it all to frans gf.... women are evil i tell you.

Don't you mean your gf??? Hopefully Kasun is telling you how easy it is to hook up with porn stars in Orlando and you come over asap.

Honestly, Fran coming over and sucking is almost more intriguing than him playing good. We're not counting on him for anything so there's no real risk. I just want to see him play already and end the suspense.
