Postseason thoughts/ramblings
Well, another season is over, second straight lotto appearance for us. Overall, it was an improvement over the gourge-my-eyes-out Musselman era. Some good things came out of this season too, as some our veterans have trade value now (Mikki, Ron, Brad) and hopefully we can start over this offseason.

My thoughts on the season.
I think it was a great first season for Theus. He really put his stamp on this team and was able to avoid pissing off the fan base too much and still try to get to .500.
I really like our future for this team.
Our offense is kinda ugly without Brad Miller. He is our only true distributor so I'm thinking that needs to be adressed this off season.
We need to move a couple wings maybe. We play too much one on one basketball even with miller in the lineup. We need to get a couple guys who are just finishers instead of Isolation guys and we need a PG that looks to pass first.
I'm hoping we trade a wing or two this offseason and get both a PG and a PF that can be part of our long term plans.
Martin has come along very nicely.
Shelden needs to get in shape and I think he will be a very servicable big. If we get a big man coach it would really benifit him.
Garcia should be starting next to Martin if we can move Salmons and Artest for picks and other needs.
Hawes turned out to be the right pick for us from last years draft. Petrie saw more there than most of us did.
If we are going to make moves and try to compete next year we need to do it during the summer instead of at the deadline. We do this to give our entire team the same training camp.
Sign Udrih for the MLE.
I could really go for Beer and Pancakes right now

Hawes,Garcia and Martin with very good years in each players' situation.
Artest and Miller had one of the best yrs in their career. I wouldn't mind seeing these 2 moved in the right deals that helped our team rebuild for the future.
Salmons and Moore were our other vets who had solid years, Moore probably stays unless he's a filler in another deal.
Douby and Williams showed signs, but still have a lot of work to do. Douby with basketball IQ, and Williams with basketball skill and getting right physically.
Beno is better than I thought he was, but Im still not comfortable in saying he's our starting PG for the next 5 years or so. I still dont mind him for the MLE or less, but until our PG situation is solved we wont be contenders.

Well, my thoughts remain much the same. It's been long enough. Time to finally start the main portion of rebuilding. We clearly have too much to lose by stuffing our youngs on the bench behind players that can only lead us as far as 10th in the West year after year.
We may lose 5-10 games more but we will lose FAR more in the long run if we straddle the white line any longer.
We HAVE to re-sign Beno. Not resigning Bonzi, although absolutely the right thing to do (in the long run!) really hurt our chances of competing these last couple of years. Not re-signing Beno would hurt badly to our rebuilding effort for equally as long, signing him at the MLE could be a Kevin Martin-esque steal.
I think we need to give John Salmons a chance to be our starting SF. I don't like the idea of trading him or keeping him in the same role he has now. You DON'T trade a guy capable of getting you 20, 4, and 4 a night, that can play the 1-3, that you have locked up for the next couple of years making less than the MLE.
I liked what I saw from Kevin this last month, I hope he continues his progression because he could possibly jump from Allen/Redd status to TMac level if he does.
Spencer is ready. Not ready to be a main component on a contender but he is ready to play in this league, and at least get the chance to develop. Hopefully they do indeed find a good big man coach. I say track down Hakeem, they have very similar moves in the post. I don't know how much he's helped Okafor thus far but Spencer really is capable of gaining from a guy like Hakeem since he has a diverse range of moves to begin with.
I look forward to seeing Shelden in shape and ready next year. He may be considered a "bust" but only because he was in one of the weakest drafts in a long time. I think he has the chance to be a very good defensive specialist, with more offensive skill than usually seen from one.
Hopefully Petrie gets things moving this summer and we don't go into next year with an aging lottery team. I'd prefer a young one please!

Just my views...
I don't like Ron, but thats quite obvious. The guy works hard enough and he's a great player but i honestly think he is gone, weither he signs an extention for a S&T or just bolts for FA. Honestly I'm hoping we S&T him for a good pick (and I don't mean lower then ours).
I'm therefor comfortable leaving the SF spot to Salmons, who I think wouldn't be a step down much at all.
Garcia is always going to be a sparkplug off the bench.
Brad Miller could very well be traded for cap or picks given how well Spencer performed in the end. it's not inconcievable and given how much Brad's stock has risen this year...
As some of you might remember i was the biggest anti-Spencer when we got him. Not anymore. The kid has seriously impressed and i think he'll be a top center soon.
Shelden showed flashes but he really needs to work on it.
I honestly think Beno is getting overrated here. Not to say he's not good - 14/5 is absoluetly nothing to sneeze at - but IMO our focus needs to be on a pass first PG as much as a PF. I still say sign Beno to a year/two MLE if we can - with his risen stock I wouldn't be surprised if he goes honestly - so he can help train his future replacement.
I am of course in the "time to rebuild" opinion and wouldn't be surprised (or increadably disapointed) if we traded Brad and Ron and ended up with 3 top 12 picks and cap space or other youngsters. I can't say i have a plan, but i trust in Petrie if that means we have the same roster next year plus a pick as we do now. I just don't think it's fisable.

Things I take from this season
- We have a glut at the wings, one must go, I prefer it to be Salmons.
- One of the main purposes of the season was fullfilled IMO, our 3 top veterans gained their values back, Miller is much more tradable now (shorter contract and improved play), Artest is expiring and playing out of his mind, Bibby is already gone.
- Another purpose was finding a coach, and Theus has done OK.
- Hawes is promising, but he isn't a starter unless you're planing on tanking beforehand.
- The PF problem is only getting worse, we started with average KT on 8 millons a year, continued with average SAR and below average KT for 14 millions a year, and now we're with average Moore and useless SAR and harmful KT for 20 millions a year, cut your losses and no more stopgap fixes there, it ain't workin' Geoff. Unless Petrie plans to use his exprining next season, cut KT loose for christ's sake.
- Be careful with Beno, he's done great, but full MLE for him is risky.
- If there was any doubt it, there shouldn't be any now, Kevin Martin is for real.

I'm more satisfied this season than last season.
- Theus really showed that he can coach in this league, even though he made some stupid moves late in the game a few times, but its still his 1st year and he is adjusting from the college level coaching which is a huge change.
- Hawes has been a great surprise, and has certainly proven me wrong for calling him a big white stiff. He has a bright future n this league, and alongside with Kevin and Francisco we might have some hope down the line.
- Douby has shown that he can be a spark plug off the bench, and I think him and Francisco could be a deadly bench combo... both don't hesitate to shoot the basketball, thats for sure... he just needs to maybe put on some more weight.
- I'm sure that we'll get the 12th pick this year, and while it seems far down, it wont be a bad spot... we're mainly looking for a PG or PF to draft, so whether someone like Westbrook or Augustin drops to the 12th Petrie will likely pick him. I wouldn't be surprised if we even picked Arthur or McGee
- Re-sign Beno for the MLE, buyout Kenny Thomas, and maybe let SAR retire so that the insurance can pick up the tab.

- As someone who follows the Huskies I was excited about the Hawes pick and knew he would be a good player in this league. He was one of the kmost sought after high schoolers and if the new rule was not put into place he would of come straight into the NBA. He will be a top ten center, but he still needs at least one more year coming off the bench before he should be considered a starter.
- Miller had a nice season and even though he might have some value now I would prefer to see him in a Kings uniform again. Like I said above Hawes needs to play behind Miller for one more year.
- Moore really makes me mad sometimes because he cannot catch a basketball but I love the energy and passion he brings. However, Moore as our starting power forward is just bad. Keep Moore but bring him off the bench. Congrats to Moore for have the best FG% of all power forwards, especially since he does shoot jump shots as well, that is impressive.
- SAR and Kenny just need to go. Whatever it takes let's just get rid of them. Both are useless to us.
- I love Ron but he will be traded. I think a sign and trade will happen this summer. I would be up for bringing in a TJ Ford for Ron. If we cannot move Ron for a good pg then maybe a good power forward (Marion, Brand, I don't know). But we cannot have Ron, Salmons, and Garcia all on the same team. One of em needs to go and even though I would like to keep Ron, we would be better off in the long run keeping Salmons and Garcia instead.
- Beno impressed me. I would be ok if he was our starting point guard or if he was coming off the bench. Either way he is good and can help our team. If we trade for TJ Ford or another point guard I doubt Beno signs with us.
- Garcia did not impress me much in the begining of the season. he was still making rookie mistakes, but he played so much better the second half of the season. Garcia has come into his own this season just like we all expected. He can do a little of everything and he plays hard whether he starts or comes off the bench and you never hear him complain. He has made himself valuable and I hope he is in this teams future.
- Sheldon showed some positive things. But he really needs to get in shape and learn the game a little better (you would think someone from Duke would be better prepared). I am not sure I see him as a starter but I think he can be a servicable big coming off the bench.
- Douby, I don't know. I think we will include him in a trade. He has skills no doubt, but does not fit this team. I do not ever see him being able to play the point effectively and with K$, Garcia, Salmons, we do not really need Douby. People compare him to Bobby and I would say yes when it comes to scoring. But even though Bobby was a scorer he could run an offense if he wanted, he has court awareness, Douby doesn't.
- I wouldn't mind seeing Moustache back but only as our 3rd point guard. It would be nice insurance in case something happens to pg #1 or pg #2.
- Bibby, it was time to move on. He was my favorite and I am not even upset he is gone.
- JWill, I did not want to see him go. I thought he was making good progress.
Good season overall considering all the injuries and having a rookie coach. I think things are on the right track. We just need a power forward.

The season was 33% successful.
Kings miss playoffs - 0 for 1
Warriors miss playoffs - 1 for 1
Lakers made playoffs - 0 for 1
So it was a 1 for 3 endeavor this season.
Next year I expect to make the playoffs. Teams like the Spurs/Mavs/Suns are all aging and will drop IMO. I think other teams will be due to have some massive injuries.

Good rebound year from last yr but 38 wins isnt something to be too happy about. With that said I think that Kev had a great year, I think that he needs to elevate his game even more to become that franchise player that we want him to be. Spencer looks good and promising.
I thought Beno was a good filler for our pg trouble, but is he worth the entire MLE? I dont think so but thats just me. I dont think hes a long term solution.

Well coming from a team that thinks Mikki Moore is worth the full MLE, yes, Beno is worth the full MLE.

Beno Udrih-He looked very promising but he isnt the guy that I want this team to have starting at point. I like what he brings but I dont think he is the PG that this team needs. I think we will be able to find that PG in the draft (DJ, Collison, Lawson).
Kevin Martin-What can I say? He looked great this year and has shown improvement every year he has been in the league. I would like to see the intangables improve. I would love to see him become a leader, but I dont think its in his personality. Hes done a great job.
Ron Artest-I am really unsure of what I want, or think is going to happen. It seems like I change my mind every day on what I want to do with him. I love what he brings on the floor but he is so unpredictable, I dont like that at all. As of now I would like to see him opt out and have John start in his place. I just cant trust the guy, even though I like him a lot.
Mikki Moore-Was absolutely blown away. He did have the fumbles multiple times this year but they decreased as the season went on. He got the boards and he can shoot as well. He isnt a great defender, so we still need that athletic big that can defend the post.
Brad Miller-Great year from him as well. He showed Great improvement compared to last year. Theus did a great ob at motivating him. I thought the days were gone where we would see Brad get almost 10 rpg. He ended the year with more rpg than Kevin Garnett.haha
Francisco Garcia-Has been doing a good job at leading this team and has shown us that he is an amazing shooter. He just needs to know when to slow down and make better decisions.
John Salmons-I like the guy a lot. I am hoping he stays here in Sac and will be able to take Rons starting spot if Ron decides to leave or we trade him. He plays defense and can score almost at will. Very surprising to me.
Quincy Douby-When given the playing time, he didnt waste it. He proved he knows how to score and play a little d. He shows some potential but I dont think he will be on this team for much longer (just a feeling). Loved that fake on Mbenga in our last game.
Spencer Hawes-After we drafted him I thought it was the biggest mistake we could have made. I was dead wrong. He has great post moves and a feel for the game that most 19 year olds dont have. It amazes me that he is only 19. He is a key piece to this teams future.
Sheldon Williams-Not to impressed with him. He can rebound and play a little d but he definitly needs to learn a lot more before he can be the player that everyone thought he was going to be.
SAR-Didnt see a whole lot of SAR, but I dont see why we would get rid of him if he is healthy. No D, but he can still put the ball in the hoop.
Anthony Johnson-He looked a little over-weight but he wasn't a bad back-up to Beno.
Lorenzen Wright-Didnt play wnough for me to form an opinion about him. He has some crazy tats though..

I didnt think Mikki is/was worth it either, but I feel like for the past couple of seasons we've been piling up these mle salaries which adds to our cap problems.
And Being that the kings are near the bottom in assist/gm in the league, Beno might not be the long term solution here and we're going to give him the FULL MLE? Seems as though we're settling because there are no alternatives. But on the other hand we need a pg in which Beno is only choice outside of trades, and I don't like any of the pgs in the draft not named Derrick Rose.
So basically im glad im not Petrie making these decisions haha

I thought Beno was a good filler for our pg trouble, but is he worth the entire MLE? I dont think so but thats just me. I dont think hes a long term solution.
For a team that saw several of its key players injured for a significant part of the season and was coached by a rookie head coach, finishing 3 games away from 0.500 is a phenomenal achievement. I stated several weeks ago that this teem needed to have 3 goal: 1, exceed last year's record (they did by 5 games); 2, finish with a 0.500 record (missed it by 3 games); and 3, achieve these goals while giving the young guys experience (I say this was met). I'm satisfied that this team met 2 of my 3 goals and came damn close to meeting the 3rd. That, to me, is something the team (and fans) should be proud of.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

I actually like the Mikki signing. I just don't like him as our starting PF. If he was the first big off the bench he'd fill a Keon Clark type of role(minus the shot-blocking) that we had a few years back. If we can get a starting caliber PF ahead of Mikki I think we'll be in good shape in our frontcourt.

I would too ^ (Smills)
But i don't think its realistic and good for our team to have 3 PF all make the mle or a bit more, all on the bench. Because of that, I think Mikki should be traded. He has value now, pretty much every contending team could use a guy like Mikki, plus his contract is only 1.5 more years, so it doesn't hurt them long term salary wise either.
I'm thinking that Mikki could net us an expiring + a late 22-30 range, which would allow Petrie to really test his ability again.

Eh, I don't see Geoff looking to deal Mikki unless it was an unreal deal which I don't see happening. I think SAR realistically might retire. Whow knows. But the bottom line is, SAR/Kenny/Mikki all expire fully in 2010. That's about 20 million in expiring contracts alone there plus the 10+ million of Brad Miller's contract. I think the Kings need to keep those assets in order to make a deal in the 09-10 season to net a superstar, a la the Pau Gasol deal.
