NBA TV? What?!

Post#1 » by PSUpanther » Fri Apr 18, 2008 3:44 pm

Why are 3 of the first 5 games in the series on NBA TV? I dont live in the Orlando area and have basic cable......meaning I wont be able to watch the games because I dont get the NBA TV channel.

Does anyone know what I can do and if there are any websites out there where I can watch the game?

You don't have to worry about the 3rd NBATV game. Never get to that point.

I guess they based the TV schedule on last year's Magic playoff performance.

Actually that is not the case, this is the problem Orlando is what the networks consider a midmarket city not a major market and that goes against them, plus they are playing the Toronto Raptors who are in Canada which also drags down the chance of getting major networks to carry these games. It's because the marketing of the games is focused on Americans not Canadians. I know it's stupid, but that's how the game is played when it comes down to what teams are going to get their games televised by the major networks.
Actually if you live in Europe it might be easier to see this game, well in certain countries. Between the two teams this game is perfect for highlighting what Stern has been trying to do with the NBA making this a true international game. You would think that this would help to bring it to a bigger network, but as I said it comes down to advertising dollars and now you all see why most of these games are not on TNT, ESPN or ABC. :noway:

To add on to cougar's post, keep in mind that Toronto also had the lowest road attendance of the season.

Our series was the easy choice by NBA execs to dump most of the NBATV games on, unfortunately. A mid-market team (Magic), facing essentially a no-market (Raptors in the U.S.) team.

Go to a sports bar? Call ahead to make sure you will be able to see it there. It's more fun if you go with a friend, but I watched lots of games all by myself while I ate a burger and downed many refills of diet soda. That was either before I got cable or after having cable didn't help. :(

I wasn't all that serious on my comment and wasn't trying to imply it as a fact. But nevertheless, I didn't know all these details on it. So thanks for the info.

Actually, I'm sad for other people. I do have NBA TV. But funny enough, what I don't have is those "network" channels, as NBC, ABC, etc. (I have TNT and ESPN). So when the Magic advance further in the playoffs, I will probably have to take Magicmamma's advice to see some of the games.

You are welcome to the information. I am working on a degree in Marketing and had to write a paper on something so I chose the Magic.
So where do you live that you don't get certain channels I am guessing not in North America

So, for us local folks without NBAtv, will SunSports or FSN carry the games?
You look confused...let me fill you in.

On the bright side, if anyone thought there was a chance of an upset then we'd get some media attention. As the old saying goes, "No news is good news."

This is the biggest problem in sports today. It all comes down to how big of an audience they can get to sell thier **** to. I feel they manufactured the Boston vs Lakers series before the season started. They may wait a year so it does'nt look so obvious. I also think they had an impact in playoff match ups across the board. I don't think there was anyway Utah would have defeated the Spurs in the final game of the season because that would have created a Spurs vs Rockets series, and I don't think they would have wanted two Texas teams playing in the 1st round.

Always a good choice.

I live in Puerto Rico. But that actually had nothing to do with me not having NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. My provider is DirecTV, and they let me "customize" my programming by selecting and deselecting some "basic" channels. Just to save a few bucks. I chose to leave those out (among others).

I heard they got SVG for an interview but he blew up when Isola said that he didn't think the Magic could guard Bosh effectively. So they just cut the interview out.

In Miami with Comcast if you have digital cable you can buy a small $5 package that has NBATV. Don't know how Brighthouse does it. Digital cable might be about as much for a month as what you might spend at a sports bar while you are there and usually down her you can just walk in and get the box without waiting for a tech date.
