Let's be realistic here, Kobe hasn't been the best player in the league since 2001. Top 5 player, Yes, but not best in the league. From 1999-2003 Shaq was the best player in the league with Duncan trailing behind. You can then argue Duncan and/or KG were the best players in the league from 2003-2005. It's from 2005-now that Kobe has been the best player in league, although personally I would take LeBron over him but that's a different issue.

I'd put Kobe around #17 all time. He may or may not move up much. The problem for Kobe now is simple...he's at or near the top of his group of players. IMO, the DRob/Pettit/Malone/Malone group is a pretty good ways ahead of him. An MVP for Kobe this year wouldn't do it. An MVP, a title, and a Finals MVP might put him in the middle of that group. Maybe.

And, sure, non-statiscal things ar eimportant. Kobe Bryant's intangibles are good...and that's being very charitable. He's had great playoff series. He's had lousy playoff series. He's pissed off coaches and teammates and management. And, yes, that is a measurable mark against him.

Yeah, everyone who says Kobe's been "clearly" the best player in the league for a number of years is just wrong. You can use that for Shaq in arguing why he should have had more MVPs, but Kobe's dominance over the competition is not in the same league. Kobe's been basically a top 5 guy since 2002, but frankly there's never been a year where I've thought it was a given that he was the best player. This year, for the first time, he's my choice for MVP, but I'd still have very little issue with someone saying Chris Paul has been the best player.

I wonder Doc if people are confusing kobes sustained excellence over a certain time period with being the best player.

Sustained excellence + those 60 point games I'd say. People see those games, recognize that Kobe's playing on a level nobody else can come close to even on their best day, and conclude he's the best player in the game by far. But the reality is that on an average day Kobe not in another league then the other top superstars, and if a guy can't reach those godlike heights at will, then his average day is what he should be judged by.

Thats a good point about those outursts by him. Those probably do tend to have a lasting impression on fans in general. I would also say that the style in his game really helps his being the best in the game image as well. He just seems more entertaining to watch.

Nice post Doc

Considering how some posters have him ranked already without an MVP, he needs about 2 more after this year to catch up, not move up.

IMO, Kobe is in the low 20's right now, even with an MVP.

I have Kobe with an MVP in the late teens to early 20s.

He's clearly behind the first tier of NBA legends

Tier one:
Jordan, Kareem, Wilt, Russell

And he's below the second tier as well
Magic, Bird, Duncan, Shaq, Moses (and if we're counting ABA days Dr.J)

Kobe is in the third tier of NBA all time players to me includes guys like
Olajuwon, Robertson, Jerry West, Pettit, Mikan Karl Malone, Hondo, David Robinson. I have Kobe somewhere right around here which is at the back end of this list moving narrowly ahead of guys like Barkley and Garnett. Meaning he's late teens or early 20s all time in my book. If he manages to win a title as the first option he can move up before the post season ends.
