Thank You Buddy Dyer, Mayor Crotty, City Council... Etc

Post#1 » by UCF » Sat Apr 19, 2008 1:56 am

Watching the news lately and seeing the drama happening in Seattle makes me so grateful for the steps our government has taken to keep the Magic right here in Orlando and not in Oklahoma City. A year ago this situation is actually what I feared for our own franchise.

So giving credit to where it's due, thank you thank you thank you!

Had they not gotten it done when they did, I do believe we could have very well lost them. Look at the market right now, they are scrapping all sorts of things to save money.

Browsing around the Seattle board... http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=781942

Just shows how real it can be. If Orlando was talking money again right now, there would be in an uproar if they were talking about spending a Billion dollars. Seattle is way bigger than us and they couldn't get it done. Only now that they have "lost" their team, are they now taking it somewhat serious. Even than, it's all about the $$$ and nothing else imo.

Seattle is much bigger, granted. But their situation is very different. The main difference being Seattle just recently built a new football stadium and baseball stadium as well (I think, not 100% sure). They've been pumping a TON of money into their sports, the Sonics just happened to get the short end of the stick.

Right. And that may very well be exactly why Stern is letting it happen. He's basically been told he's third in the pecking order, and he can't possibly like that at all.

Stern is a man of principle. I just read the book "Making Magic", which details exactly how Orlando won the franchise, and there's an entire chapter on the struggles they were facing to secure the 10,000 season tickets needed to make the franchise official -- this is after it was approved. And there's a paragraph in which Pat Williams and Russ Granik basically say that if they fell short of that number by the deadline, Stern was just flat out going to take the franchise away. That's how adamant he was about getting everything he wanted from the city.

If Orlando does not make the playoffs in 2007, this deal does not get done.

Timing is everything.

I was a fan of the Miracle ( for out of towners, Our old WNBA team ), They lasted, I think it was 4 years,
I woke up one morning to find they had gone ( They became the Connecticut Suns ), No warning whatsoever.
I have prayed for years that the same thing doesnt happen to the Magic.

I guess we can also compare our situation to include our massive new convention space when talking facilities between us and Seattle. David Stern definitely makes sure his teams are taken care of. Its why he is the best at his profession. Seattle tried to play hard ball and lost. Orlando for a while tried the same this but not as bad.

The Colts left Baltimore secretly in the middle of the night during a snow storm.
