Other teams can only offer them 5 ? Does Kawakami have it right?

Damn, I don't want Goose and Ellis to get that long contracts. What if they get an injury and won't live up to the hype...

Too bad they can't sign 10 year contracts.

Why is he called Goose?

Yes, Tim's figures are correct for Biedrins & apply to any RFA coming off the 4th year of his rookie contract.

There are slightly different rules for those drafted in the second round. I am not sure if Ellis can be offered the same numbers. See question #37 in Coon's FAQs. It's confusing, but Ellis does have 3 years in - so perhaps he can get the same offer

The intent was to prevent a second rounder from making the max as quickly as a first rounder. It really is a moot point since neither will get the max - but I think Tim is wrong on Ellis.
The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.

Yeah he's got it right. What a f'n douche though. He's supposed to be the Dubs guy at the paper and he struggles with CBA 101? He lacks b-ball knowledge, but you'd think he'd at least brush up on this stuff.

Anyhoot, its all in the Bible of Coon (as CPH puts it). Check out the the big table under Question 19 for specifics on exceptions and Question 46 for length of contracts and maximum raises.

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#30

Both Goose (by the way, I don't get the "Goose-call". He looks like Iceman, but everyone calls him Goose? Why not just Dre?) and Ellis qualify for the Larry Bird Exception. To qualify "The player must have played for three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent". They can be signed up to the maximum salary.

Tommy Udo, is this what you were referring to? "There is one more limit to the maximum salary that can be given using the Larry Bird exception. If the player was a first round draft pick and just completed the third year of his rookie scale contract, but his team did not exercise their option to extend the contract for the fourth season (see question number 41), then this exception cannot be used to give him a salary greater than he would have received had the team exercised their fourth year option. In other words, teams can't decline the option in order to get around the salary scale and give the player more money"

Other teams can offer up to 5 year deal with max 8% raises, while the Warriors can offer up to a 6 year deal with max 10.5% raises. Doesn't really matter though, becuase if the Dubs offer Dre a 6 year deal with 10.5% raises starting at $7 million (total deal worth $53M, average of $8.8M per year), and some other team "only" offers him a 5 year deal with 8% raises starting at $10 million (total deal worth $56.6M, average salary of $11.3M), what do you think he's going to take. The lesson children, as always, is that Timmy K is an idiot.

And I think he's under-estimating what Beans...errr....Goose..errr...Dre is gonna get. Tim guesses 6 years $50 million. Last offseason, no real hard numbers were revealed, but the sides were said to be at least "$10 million apart". Now it would have been a 5 year extension, because he was already under a set salary for this past year, but best guess is that Mullin was offering $45 to $50 million and Dre was asking for $55 to $60 million. You figure $10 million per is the going rate for a big, so the final deal should be around there somewhere. Maybe a little higher, maybe a little lower, but point being that if it's a 6 year deal, it's more like $60 million, which would have a starting salary a hair under $8 million this next season.

I still keep my prediction live.... QO for Beans, 3 years for Tay... I can only imagine Beans wanting a multiyear deal if he's getting payed what hes actually worth (9-10 per) while Tay might try a Wade/Bosh/LeBron move... remember, this guy has dealt with a 2nd round salary for 3 years now. Time to move on up.

Kawakami's always about 3 or 4 months late compared to this board...

Check out his blog right below it:

TK's a big pussy though... talk about being diplomatic... we can see what he wants to convey (that it took 80.5 games for Nellie to puff his chest out at Baron) but he immediately goes to diplomat mode for the rest of his article..

Funny enough, I started reading some comments...

I sincerely hope Mullin doesn't low-ball Biedrins into the QO. Piss him off and leave him unrestricted in the summer of 2009, when quite a few teams will have cap room and a need for a player like Dre. No thanks. As for Tay, I'd think he'd prefer a 6 year deal for those reasons you mentioned. Time to get set for life, and squeeze as much total money out of this payday that you can. for 6 more years (at least) of Tay.

I agree with you Flop. I think people are running scared a little to much.

I think they call him Goose, because his neck is so effing long.

I hope ya'll are right, as long as we keep Dre and Tay and have a leader like Baron or Jack. We'll put together some other pieces somehow.

Who knows why people get nicknames. That's what Stack Jack and Boom Dizzle call him, so that's his nickname. He does sorta look like a goose.

AI, quit smellin' Goose.

They both pretty much passed every plateau of "hype" so far and are still young, self propelled and pretty healthy. You trade off years for paying a bit less per. We'd be wise to make a respectful 6 year offer bearing in mind these are YOUNG guys yet already vital to any success we will have.

Biedrins is the best C talent we have had sice Nate Thurmond. A few days ago there was a trade thread with us trading Monta and getting Beasley (#1 pick) + Dorrel Wright from Miami. When Monta is in a race to the rim ....he wins...period. Meanwhile his rbd-asst-steals numbers are pretty impressive. And how many more years will he have in the league? He will be in his prime when most current All Stars are retiring. This ain't Dunleavy. :noway:
CENSORED... No comment.
