two years ago, LeBron came in second and during the playoffs he proved wrong many of the reasons I saw voters give for voting against him. You could make a case for wade, but that would be more a playoff MVP than a combined MVP. Perhaps there was a better case for Dirk winning that one.
Last year LeBron carried his team to the finals including that legendary performance in game 5 against the pistons while the guy who won MVP clearly wouldn't have won after his playoff performance. I think it'd be hard to give the season+playoffs MVP to duncan last year when he wasn't the MVP for his own team in the finals.
This year he has a pretty big hurdle to overcome as the consensus is pretty strong that he's no better than 3rd right now and there's a strong chance that one of the two guys ahead of him gets to the finals. LeBron would have to get the cavs to the finals and win against them to overcome that.
Oh no man, I knew you were talking about that.
In '05-06, I had LeBron as my regular season MVP, and Wade finishing 2nd to him. Wade was easily more impressive in the playoffs, so it's wasn't close for overall MVP. Now, if you had him as nothing close to an MVP candidate in the regular season, I could understand reluctance to call him the overall MVP. However, if you had him as nothing close to a contender, it was because you were underrating him under the assumption that Shaq was a lot more important than he actually was, and you should retroactively realize that was a mistake.
In '06-07, I had Duncan easily ahead of LeBron in the regular season MVP race, Duncan had a fantastic playoff against any team that could threaten the Spurs, and which obviously didn't include the Cavs, who wouldn't have gotten close to the Finals had they been in the West. Now if you had Duncan as not a strong contender for MVP in the regular season, I could understand reluctance to call him the overall MVP. However, if you didn't have Duncan as a strong contender for MVP, you were just plain wrong.
