What do you think of this Trade? (Portland and Atlanta)
I have been thinking about these 2 young teams and what makes sense for each franchise. Both teams have some very good young pieces. Here is the trade that I am proposing...
Atlanta trades:
-Josh Smith (sign and trade)
-Solomon Jones (makes trade work)
Portland trades:
-Travis Outlaw
-Raef Lafrentz (expiring contract)
-13th pick in the NBA Draft
Who does Atlanta do this deal?
-I don't think Josh Smith is the answer at PF. He is just too small, and teaming him with a smallish C in Al Horford means their team defense will be average at best. So if Atlanta agrees with me on that, they will look at Josh Smith as a SF instead of a PF. Atlanta already has a pair of SF's (depending on what they do with Childress) that are solid. They aren't as good as Josh Smith, but they are still good enough. If Atlanta wants to keep Josh, they will need to pay some pretty good money and I don't think SF is a position where they need to really open up their wallets. Plus if they do this trade, they will have both LaFrentz and Bibby's huge contracts coming off the books next year, which makes Atllanta a major player in the free agent market.
Atlanta also gets a SF back in the deal (Travis Outlaw) that does some of the things that Josh Smith does and they get him at a MUCH, MUCH more reasonable price. And like I said above, they get Raef's huge expiring contract which can help with their salary cap situation at the end of the year. They also get that 13th pick, which I think could be VERY valuable. There are many Center prospects that Atlanta could target with that 13th pick. DeAndre Jordan, Kevin Love, Javale McGee, Robin Lopez, Hasheen Thabeet, etc could all be a big help in the middle for the Hawks. Or Atlanta could look at a quality PG like Augustin or Collison. This is a very deep draft and a good player will fall to #13...and Atlanta doesn't even have a pick.
Why does Portland do this deal?
-I think this is a no-brainer for Portland. The #13 pick isn't as important to the Blazers because they need a more proven player to put with the new guys like Oden, Roy and Aldridge. Outlaw is good, but the addition of Smith would greatly diminish his PT anyways.
Smith is the ultimate glue-guy for a team like this. He plays good defense, gets steals, blocks shots, and does a good job of getting buckets off of plays that aren't designed for him....and with Brandon Roy and Greg Oden, Smith won't have many plays drawn up for him. Portland's biggest rival out West will be the Lakers. They will be the team that Portland needs to battle for the division. Josh Smith is as good of a matchup as you can get for Kobe Bryant. He is tall (6-9) fairly strong (240 pounds) and extremely athletic. He can give Bryant fits. And could you imagine a front-line of Smith-Aldridge-Oden? Talk about length, athletic ability, rebounding, and defense.
The only issue "may" be the contract. I am assuming that the sign and trade would be for a close to max deal...something like the contract Joe Johnson got from Atlanta. That would hurt the pocketbook, but Allen has never been shy to spend money.
PG: Jarret Jack
SG: Brandon Roy
SF: Josh Smith
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
C: Greg Oden
That looks like a young lineup that can win some titles.

i'm not going to be mean.... but try again, seriously, ATL rejects the first offer, so do you have a counter?

I don't think Portland does that with the first. But other than that the trade seems like a possibility, but it depends how high Portland is on Outlaw, who I think is a much better player than Marv.
Based on what? I tell you...this board is a joke when it comes to realizing the value of our players. Marvin and Outlaw have similar production now...the only difference is that Marvin was alot better in his 3rd year than Outlaw was in his.
That 1st trade is awful. I agree with LH/JS. The worse we get beat down on National TV...the less the value of our players is going to go down. Smith and Outlaw both have bad shot selections...the only difference is that Outlaw has a better jumper. There's really nothing he can do better than Josh outside of shoot and he actually shoots a lower percentage than Josh from the field. If the Hawks trade Smith is better be in a package for a clearly better player(ala Jefferson for KG)or it better be for a center.

Outlaw was 21 his 3rd year...so was Marvin. 4 months really doesn't make that much of a difference. The fact is Marvin is alot better than Outlaw was at the same age and Outlaw isn't significantly better on offense or defense as of right now. Outlaw's only big advantage over Marvin right now is getting off more shots despite being much less efficient.

I would not trade Smith for Aldridge and I'm sure the Blazers wouldn't do it either.
Bibby+Zaza for JO then flip Marvin+protected future first for Conley if they draft Rose. There's also Bibby for Nene and Chucky Atkins but that's pretty risky(although trading an expiring for Chandler was viewed as risky 2 years ago as well).

Smoove for Oden is the beginning of a deal. I posted that over on the POR side (I know, I know) and never got to expand on the deal before the thread was locked. I thought maybe we'd find out what their fans thought we'd have to add to get Oden. I'd add Chilz; I'd add picks; I'd add a lot of picks.
But there is nothing else POR has to offer in any deal for Josh Smith. I wouldn't trade Smoove for Aldridge or Roy.

My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

^ Agree. Nor would I trade Marvin for Aldridge. Aldridge is yet another PF, why do we need him when I thought people on here wanted a center?
Smith>Aldridge
I think Horford is o.k. at center. He has been at the center position all year and will only get better there. Not every team in the NBA have a Howard or Shaq, so all of you all should calm down.

Indeed, its a question of fit.
Aldridge works with Oden because he is a finesse guy with some range. Oden can handle to shot blocking. Smith wouldn't be a bad fit next to Oden but he wouldnt' be as good of a fit as Aldridge.
On the flip side, neither Aldridge or Horford are particularly good shotblockers and Aldridge is softer than Smith in man defense.
On offense, Aldridge shoots a little higher from the field (.484 to .456) but since he is soft as a teddy bear he gets to the line a lot less so his TS% is the exact same (.523 to .520).
Wanting to trade Smith is one thing. Wanting to trade him for a guy who doesn't help the team as much just because you don't like Smith is plain stupid.
