Dirk or Amare?

I voted Amare, but it depends. Amare for most of the game, Dirk at the end and in the clutch. He has a very undeserved rep for being a choker, and he really is pretty clutch at the end of games.

Amare is more talented and athletic...but at the end of the game, defenses can more easily stop him than Dirk...Dirk is also a significantly better FT shooter, although Amare has been very, very good this season.

Amare just goes for shot blocking, but when he plays against Boozer, West, Bosh, and other All-Star power forwards, shot blocking is just not a possibility, and he becomes a no presence on defense. Dirk is always there, and is also taller, and indeed an underrated shot blocker.

how can someone be an underrated shot blocker? The stats are there, either you block shots or you don't. It's not like defense, where there's stuff like rotations and altering shots that are not in the stat sheet.

Well, type of blocked shot (to teammates or out of bounds), shooting foul-to-block ratio, that sort of thing.

Some guys block a bunch of shots but aren't super effective on D as a result. I wouldn't call Amare an overrated shot blocker though, not this year. He's doing a good job rotating and contesting shots, he's just a really terrible man defender, that's all.

the OP wrote offensive big man anyway. I'd take with Amare. People will say that nash gets him his points but that would be (mostly) wrong. He's hitting the fadeaway more consistantly and is unstoppable in close.

Dirk's clearly the better perimeter shooter while Amare's better in the post. Comparing Dirk and Amare is hard since they specialize in different areas, so my answer is no answer.

It depends.

If I have a Steve Nash type-PG (or I guess just a really good playmaker) I'd take Amare. Otherwise I would go with Dirk.

Either one? My preference is Amare because I cant stand soft players. Then again, Amare is soft is some ways, just not as soft as dirk.

Amare has a fadeaway and a good face-up post game to go with a baseline spin and a jump-step into the lane for a simple hook. He's got a post game.

I'd say that Amare has been the superior offensive player this season, although a down year by Dirk's standards is still a top offensive player in the game. If I were taking a guy in peak form, I'd take Dirk. He's just such a mismatch, the way defenses are forced to react to him and the way he can space the floor and be a legitimate focal point in the offense due to his passing and versatility is more valuable (in my mind) than Amare's insane scoring efficiency.

Dirk's +/- numbers really speak for themselves. He impacts the game more than Amare does because of the way he plays and opens up the floor of other players. I don't think Amare's presence does as much for his teamates although his own production certainly puts him squarely in this comparison.

I also think that Dirk is a better defender, man and team. He is better at coming out and bothering shooters, comparable defensive rebounder.
