We still have yet to see odom play SF.... if he can produce the same at the wing position, then he is a definite keeper... otherwise he will have to accept coming off the bench so gasol can be rotated to the center position and take bynum out early to give all three near equal minutes. Atleast then we won't have a weak center coming off the bench and an overstack of SFs. Still have to see what Phil does with the minutes.

Trade Sasha before he ruins the Lakers next season.

it's a matter of how the pieces of the puzzle fit once bynum's back. odom's playing outstanding right now at the pf position but when bynum is back, odom's minutes at pf will be limited. it would be a great luxury for the lakers to keep him and always have a solid tandum at the c/pf but if he doesn't work well at sf then i think the lakers might move him for a better fit at sf or pg. personally, i'm hoping he works out at the 3 but from what i've seen in the past of him playing sf, i'm a bit skeptical.

lamar's ability to fill in at pf and sometimes center and be an elite rebounder is priceless. lakers big men get injured, a lot. odom's versatility isn't a luxury anymore, it's a necessity.
he's much more important than a true sf who will add to the glut (ariza, vlad, luke, kobe for spot minutes)
again, i stress, odom's versatilty is no longer a luxury, its a necessity.

odom's a necessity right now but if the lakers bigs go relatively injury free next season.........................he's back to being a luxury. that's why i'm hoping to see what he can do at the sf with both bynum and gasol. it seems like that playing further out would reduce his impact (further from the basket hinders both his rebounding and offense) like it has in the past. which then moves him into the realm of a luxury for small minutes as a big and an added glut of marginal sf's.

Lamar is a monster right now. I'd like to keep him around and make him a captain next year.

Everytime i think about that, id like to watch first how it works with Bynum at 100%.
Anyway, is not good to change something that is working, id resign him

when is the last time the lakers went relatively injury free? its an urban legend.
lamar, even when the other bigs are healthy, will still get plenty of minutes at pf. bynum's going to be a 30-35 minute player, just like gasol.
fisher 24 / farmar 24
kobe 35 / sasha 13
odom 15 / ariza, walton, vlad 33
gasol 20 / odom 20 / turiaf 8
bynum 32 / gasol 13 / turiaf 3

The way he's playing now, you can't. He's become the glue guy for this lakers squad. Keying all the interior passing, grabbing all the boards, even starting a fast break or two with a steal or block on the defensive end. When he forces a turnover, he looks to run. I do wish he'd stay off the baseline 3's. It's just not his game.
So that said, you do not rock the boat when things are going like they are. One of Odom or Bynum should come off the bench next year. I'll still say, we have to get Bynum back and see how everyone fits in. Remember, Odom is gonna be a massive expiring contract next year.

i'm not advocating trading odom i'm just saying there's lots of things the lakers are going to take into consideration. but i disagree with your mpg for bynum and gasol. i think they'll both be 35+mpg barring foul trouble. so imo, odom's going to get the lion's share of his minutes at sf with bynum and gasol in the lineup. it would be great if odom can continue this level of play at the sf position but it's a wait and see thing.

Since he was a Cipper, I loved his game and versatility. As a Laker, I though he'd help open things up and team up w Kobe to be a good 1-2 punch.
That never came to fruition and his tendancy to disappear and inability to make big shot led me to believe he was too soft to be counted on. Before Gasol I felt we should trade him for a more depenable 18 ppg forward.
But now that he is taking less jumpshots and attacking the rim, he's become a steady 15 and 13 guy. Gasol has taken the pressure off LO to score and he's no longer "thinking" about his NEED to score. He's just playing ball.
He'll be a pricey 4 option come next year but he'll be another BIG that teams won't be able to handle. This will be the difference between being a top team and being THE freakin Beatles.
On top of his on court contributions, the guy seem like a cool cat and the bench mob seems to take well to him. He's a perfect fit in the locker room, keeping the boys loose.
If we go to the Finals this year I say lock him up at 10M. He may get better offers but I think he likes the situation he is in in LA LA.

Lamar is a necessity NOW.
How he plays when Bynum comes back determines his value THEN.
I think it's a bit foolish to deny Odom's terrific play and importance to our team right now, like d-cash said, he's essential.
But it's also premature to assert he'll be equally important in the future, at least in Buss's eyes and bank account.
