Smills91 wrote:I guess I just hold a much different drafting philosophy. You can't squander lotto picks. You HAVE to get something from them. Take the sure-fire BPA. That's how you get out of the lottery, whether you stockpile assets and make a deal, YOU HAVE to trade. The HAwks are a prime example of a team that keeps swinging for the fences after every pick and striking out, the Warriors(in the lottery picks) the same could be said.
I think you have to swing for the fences sometimes, and I think at this point, we may have to. We need another great young player on this team. Since we're not high enough to get a definite great player, we have to take a risk IMO. I don't see Collison as ever being a main piece in a trade to acquire a superstar, so I don't know if that would really help us in that respect. The key is to not take the risks when you could already have other players that you know will be great.
When you look at the Hawks' draft history, you have to look at the situations with the picks.
2000 - Dermarr Johnson - Okay, sure, they swung and missed here, but so did pretty much everyone else in what was perhaps the worst draft of the past couple decades.
2001 - Picked Pau and traded him for SAR, who was more of a sure thing at the time, but I'm sure they're kicking themselves now about that.
2002 - 2003 - no picks
2004 - With their lotto pick, they went really safe with Childress....and missed out on Iguodola because of it. But with their 17th pick, they took a risk, and got Josh Smith. And it worked.
2005 - Now, I don't look at Marvin as swinging for the fences as much as just pure incompetance. Like I said before, when you have future great players available, you don't swing for the fences (especially when said player doesn't even fill a need for you). But Collison is not a future great player.
2006 - People criticized the hell out of them for not drafting for need, they panicked, and drafted Shelden. He wasn't a "high potential" guy really, and Atlanta seemed to be the only team that though he had more than role players' capabilities. So this isn't really swinging for the fences. Just stupid drafting.
2007 - I think they'll be happy with Horford and Law.
I guess what I'm getting at is that Geoff can draft sure things all day long. If we want him to find a sure thing, we can look to acquire a later pick--like in the early 20's that will go on to be worth and late-lotto pick because Geoff just has that good of an eye for talent. But I think that in our position right now, a risk is worth taking.

I just don't see how Augustin is considered a better NBA prospect at PG than Collison. I just don't see it.
Augustin = poor man's Damon Stoudamire
Collison = Bill Gates version of Darrell Armstrong
The fact that Augustin is a better ball handler, way better passer, better scorer, and pretty much owned Collison when they played. THAT's how.

College game is MUCH different than the NBA game. See Adam Morrison.
Yeah so? Augustin is no Adam Morrison(and I had Morrison pegged as a bust then too btw). Fact is Augustin's the better shooter, the better ball handler, the better finisher, the better passer(MUCH better passer), and just a better all around player in general. Collison had just as many problems defensively vs Rose that Augustin did so I don't see his defense as anything special in the NBA. Hell he had so many problems defensively vs Rose that UCLA put Westbrook on Rose but then they had Collison guarding Chris Douglas Roberts. Memphis went at whoever Collison was "guarding" and he got scored on pretty much every time if you review the film it proves my point.
Really I'm not sure where this reputation that Collison is a great defender comes from anyway. Westbrook was the best defensive guard on that team. Whenever Collison went up against a good player he pretty much got owned. VS Rose he got owned. When he went up against Augustin he got owned. Bayless did well against him. Donald Sloan(TxA&M) did well against him. He is a GOOD defender in college but like you said college doesn't always translate to the NBA. The stuff Collison does well in college doesn't stand out vs NBA players. The stuff Augustin does well does. Augustin will be the better guard for sure.

Now that workouts have come out, does everyone still agree with these rankings? Who would go up and who would drop down? I would think Love would move up and Jordan coming down

We don't have a good enough draft position for any of those guys, especially Bayless/Love/Lopez. Those are probably picks 4-6.

Right.
I guess the point of the thread was to see who we would draft and in what order.
so, players 7-8th to 12th
Personally for me it goes
(Of course the no brainers ie, Rose, Beasley, Mayo, etc)
1. Russell Westbrook
2. Anthony Randolph
3. Brook Lopez
4. DeAndre Jordan
5. JaVale McGee
6. Speights
7. Darrell Arthur
8. DJ Augustin
