Howard: With Skiles, Bucks seem to get it right

Post#1 » by Captain Erv » Tue Apr 22, 2008 3:13 am

Howard climbs out of his bed to write one of his three yearly columns...and credits the wrong guy.

The noted basketball firm of Kohl, Walter, Burr, Babcock & Steinmiller is finally off the clock. . . .

And you have nobody else to thank but the very capable John Hammond,
the Milwaukee Bucks' spanking new general manager who, in just one week, rebuilt the team's brain trust into one that most can actually trust.

With the hiring of Scott Skiles, the former Michigan State star and erstwhile NBA point guard, as the team's latest anointed savior at the coaching position, Bucks owner/czar Sen. Herb Kohl, VP Ron Walter, CFO Mike Burr, director of player personnel Dave Babcock and VP of business operations John Steinmiller will not have to rely solely on themselves for what is sure to be one of the toughest transformations in the league next season.

And this is a good thing.

After sifting through Terry Porter, Terry Stotts and Larry Krystkowiak, Bucks fans should be more than satisfied with Skiles' no-nonsense approach to the game.

But therein lies the rub.

A majority of the players on his last team, the Chicago Bulls, thought that Skiles was inflexible. He didn't even blink, for instance, before telling Ben Wallace that he could not play on his team while wearing a headband. The headband was just Skiles' comfort zone, nothing more, yet it was just one tiny instance of Skiles pushing his players in the opposite direction.

And when the Bulls' record headed south, Chicago gave Skiles his walking papers.

But one man's garbage is definitely something different to another. Just ask the Denver Nuggets, who picked up George Karl after he wore out his welcome with the Bucks.

Denver was rewarded for its confidence in Karl with a post-season berth that rings of promise for the franchise's future.

That is all the Bucks' season ticket-holders want at this point.

The same can be done again in Milwaukee and would have had Kohl (I can't believe Larry Harris picked Larry The K) not opted for Krystkowiak, a coach who was just too inexperienced to handle the many different facets of the pro game.

Skiles can surely bring this franchise back to the post-season as he did with Phoenix and Chicago, but this time he needs to be more aware that this is a two-way street in the new millennium NBA.

"I'll set the tone," he said at his news conference Monday. "It's no mystery as to what I expect."

No, it is not.

And depending on his roster - and that is a huge depend - Skiles should have an infinitely better group to put on the floor. But he needs to work more closely with this team than he did with his crew in Chicago, meaning leading . . . not preaching, pushing and bullying.

Don't get me wrong, he needs to do some of that, which is one of the reasons he was hired, but if he were to start this summer by building a solid relationship with Michael Redd, his lone, certified star, then Skiles would be one giant step ahead in his quest to jump-start the Bucks. Andrew Bogut has improved greatly and should take another step forward next season, and Charlie Villanueva was obviously handcuffed by Krystkowiak. Those three should be a solid nucleus but we'll leave the rest of the roster squarely in Hammond's lap for major restructuring.

Still, the big steps have finally been taken and Milwaukee has new leaders in Hammond and Skiles, two basketball men who know more than a little bit about the NBA.

Yes, the Bucks' basketball firm got not one, but two right in the past week, and you know what. . . .

It's about time.

Redd-Bogut-CV.. a recipe for disaster.. whatever nucleus has Michael Redd in it, its bound to be a failure.. a strong nucleus just CANNOT contain the name Michael Redd in it.. period..

Yea, I got the impression he hadn't watched a lot of Bucks ball this year. Or last year.

It would have been better if he'd stayed in bed.

Yes, CV was obviously handcuffed during those last 30 games where he could take as many bad shots as he wanted and was almost never benched for his matador defense. Maybe Skiles could beat some sense into him, but I think Skiles/Hammond would probably prefer not to even try.

I think you could have reasonably argued for a Bogut/Redd/CV core in November 2006.

Actually Gary Howard has courtside seats for every game...and is usually there at most of them. It is part of the cozy relationship between Howard and the Bucks that most other journalists in town think is unethical.

Since Howard doesn't report on the Bucks nor write more than 2 or 3 columns all year, there isn't any journalistic reason for him to get courtside seats like he has for the past 15-years.

Howard has also come under fire over the years for making friends with the players. So, I'm guessing he gets along well with Redd and CV...so that gives him some bias there.

I hope the only reason that CV is on that list is the New York connection they share. Otherwise I have no other explanation to why anybody would want to build around CV after what he showed this year.

Howards job is obviously to boost, guys like CV, and Redds trade value, why else would he get court side seats but only Write 2 or 3 articles a year, they must be 2 or 3 well timed articles.

Sure. I was one of them.

But you couldn't have argued for that core after last season.

Leadersship
Committment
Devotion
Discipline
Hustle
Character
Identity
Toughness
Accountability
Responsibility
Professionalism

Some will say, "aw, these are all just.....words." But these are all traits Skiles has brought with him in his playing and coaching career that we have not had one iota of since Don Nelson left!

If all this can lead to wins as well that is a bonus. But as a fan I do not want to be embrassed to be a Bucks fan again and get dumped on by
the players of our team.

No babies allowed. You can no have a team here that does not care or give an effort every night out and who says one thing and does another like Redd and be a weak boned jelly spine loser.

Players want the glory, the touches, the status, the duckets ($$$) but then run from playing the game like a man on and off the court and then being accounting to each other and then the ticket buying public who has no choice but to be fans of their hometown team.

Today's players have a motto "I am gonna get mine!" I am gonna be down for mine...and no one gives a damn about the game, the team,
or the town or fans they play in and for!

Perhaps Skiles will help bring back some priorities and get back to re-defining Bucks' basketball the way we should and deserve to see it.

I love the hire.

It's been said many times that this was Paxon's rule and not Skiles, but I have a feeling it will never die until we see people wearing headbands.

Absolutely...November 2006 is a long time ago. I was trying to underscore how outdated Howard's mindset is.

I'm sure he'd make an exception for CV becaue CV needs to wear a headband to keep sweat out of his eyes due to his condition.

You're probably right on both counts, Adam...here's some more sources on the rule being Paxson's:

AP wrote:The no-headband rule came from Paxson, who said he didn't like the cavalier way Bulls wore headbands when he took over for Jerry Krause in April 2003.

"It's not meant in any way to stifle anybody's individuality or creativity," Paxson said. "It was just simply part of a structure we were trying to create."
