While I agree on the premise, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Posey was a below average player. I think he may have been a sub-optimum player to choose to pair with Garnett with Posey playing PF, though.
Before I list the results, I thought I would throw out my belief in the reasoning for the excessive minutes of Posey at PF. I think 1. Doc was adamant about getting Tony Allen back on track. To do so, there had to be available minutes on the wing. I am not arguing that he did wrongly in doing so, I am just stating what I believe one of the main reasons that Pierce saw virtually zero time at SG this season. 2. I think Doc was hesitant to step on Ray Allen's toes. If he was to rest Ray, playing a paired Posey and Pierce on the wings, it probably wouldn't have gone over too well. Not judging the reasoning, really, just stating what I believe to have happened that we arrived at the outcome we did.
Ok, Posey as a PF, in certain situations is probably a good idea. It all depends on the situations, though. Below, in particular, I wanted to highlight the Garnett/Posey pairing. Posey was absolutely fantastic playing SF in line-ups with Garnett. Posey as a PF, though, not so good.

The hawks are one team that I like Posey at PF against. Last game, Doc did for the first time I can remember, play Pierce at SG and Posey at SF. Against bigger teams, this would be a good idea, but against the hawks it didn't seem to work too well. When that lineup was in the game the Hawks went on a run.

For the next major lineup Doc subbed Ray in for Pierce...again with Posey at SF
The Cassell, Ray, Posey, Powe, Brown lineup was a -4, in just about 3 minutes.
By this time Atlanta had almost tied the game, and Doc inserted Tony and Garnett for PJ and Powe.
This lineup of Cassell, Ray, Tony, Posey, and Garnett was a +7.
I thought Tony gave us favorable matchups vs. the Hawks but he only got 9 minutes of playing time, half his season average, due mainly to Doc playing Posey at SF. Eddie House was also hit pretty hard with this change and only got 5 minutes of PT. For the game, tony was a +8, Eddie was a +4, and Posey was a +5 in 28.4 minutes. Rondo only played 28 minutes himself and Perk played 20. So outside of the big 3, Posey played the most minutes.
This game was a rout, so it'll be interesting to see if Doc plays Tony and Eddie at all once the matchups get more difficult. He's definitely trying to shorten the rotation, and might miss Tony and Eddie if he does.
