Celtics forward Kevin Garnett became the first Boston player to be voted as the league's Defensive Player of the Year today.
Garnett earned 493 points (90 first place votes, 12 second place, seven third place). Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby finished second with 178 points.
Garnett led the Celtics to hold opponents to 90.3 points per game. Garnett averaged 7.3 defensive rebounds per game, 1.2 blocks per game, and 1.4 steals per game. He had a season-high seven blocks at Chicago on Dec. 12.
Kia Motors will donate a seven-passenger SUV in Garnett's name to the Boston Center for Youths and Families, which supports KG's Big Ticket Challenge Program.

Well done KG! Well deserved.
Although on another note it's also sad that TD has yet to win one considering he's been doing what KG just did for the past 10 years. Why have they all of a sudden changed it from being stat driven to defensive impact on your team? The NBA really is a joke sometimes. However i am happy they are finally giving credit to bigmen who actually make a defensive impact on the entire team and not making it a stupid stat padding exercise in futility. There's no way Camby deserved it over TD last year.

Duncan is a great defender; what amazes me about him (and it's something I've underestimated over the years) is how strong he is.
When you look at him, you don't think he's very strong.
He doesn't look as muscular as guys like Dwight, Shaq, and Amare, but he's very strong.
He can back down anyone and it's very tough to back him down; Shaq doesn't have an easy time backing him down and he weighs 325 pounds.
But yeah, Duncan does it all.
- Great rebounder, shot-blocker, man-to-man defense, he always knows where to be.
I'm shocked that he's never won the DPOY award yet.
He's as good as it gets.

Interestingly enough, Duncan has never even finished 2nd.
If it weren't Camby last year, it would've been Bruce Bowen.

KG deserves it, happy to see that..
I used to think Kobe was the most overrated defender in the NBA, because he got by on rep a lot..but I have to change my vote to Camby, especially after watching the Lakers game..my friends that are Nuggets fans used to always tell me about how bad of a man defender Camby is, but I didn't get to watch him often until last year..he gets pushed around everywhere, half the time he just gambles, and he doesn't anchor a good defensive team neither..3 blocks a game is impressive and all, but all it takes is 3 gambles to achieve that..even Amare blocks shots..
