Battier 3rd in DPOY Voting

Boston's Kevin Garnett won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award on Tuesday. He beat out Denver's Marcus Camby and Houston's Shane Battier.

Garnett received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes. Camby, who won the award last season, finished second with 178 points and Battier had 175 points.

Congratz. I thought he deserved 2nd, not 3rd, but still glad that the general of the 2nd greatest defensive team is getting some due recognition.

im a raptors fan but i personally thought he was a the best defensive player this year...i saw him play in a couple of games and he's a great player, not to mention he has to defend the wings which are the deepest and most talented positions.

while kg has to defendmostly just eastern conference bigs, which...other than bosh, and a choice few arent all that impressive.

but kg is a huge team defender, communication and such, but i really like battier as a defensive player.

I thought Battier was the best defensive player behind Garnett. He should have been 2nd. He better make all defensive first team though.

Nice to see him get at least that recognition. What I'm waiting for is the All-Defense teams, last time didn't Battier finish 5th? And yet he didn't even make the defensive teams.

Defensive teams have been pretty mis-leading, alot of it is based on reputation as a player. I mean Hughes, Wade, and Kobe LAST season (he's great every other but last year he wasn't All-NBA caliber) made it and none of them are better defenders than Shane.

What's more astonishing is that the DPOY is selected by the media, whereas the NBA All-Defensive Teams are assembled by the 30 head coaches around the league. The fact Hughes, and Kobe (at least last year) made the former lists shows that the coaches have no idea what they're doing.

John Hollinger would like to point out that defensive efficiency isn't the same as points scored. Since the Nuggets play at one of the highest paces in the league, their opponent PPG is going to be higher. According to defensive efficiency, they're actually middle of the road.
