Why don't people say that Tony Parker is better than Nash?

Post#1 » by shobe_81 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 5:12 pm

He has more playoff wins

More playoff series, more championships, He also has a Finals MVP

I mean do people value the regular season because Nash has 2 MVP's for what? To prove that he cannot lead an elite team in the playoffs and into the Finals?

And Nash plays 0 defense in that run-n-gun style the Suns try to live by. And now with Shaq he cannot even win games with big leads. And whenever Nash plays Tony Parker, Tony rips him apart

That is true that Parker might have accomplished more goals than Nash, but think about it. He won finals MVP because he had Duncan manning the middle and we're talking about the CAVS here...THE CAVS!! they had no interior defense whatsoever last season, hence, Parker's driving abilities just ate up their defense while Duncan sucked defenders away from him.

Besides, I'm not a huge fan of Parker's game. His game just doesnt seem to flow to me, unlike people such as Chris Paul, Steve Nash, or Gilbert Arenas.

I love Tony, but he isn't as good as Nash..

there's too much hate on Nash lately..it isn't his fault they lost both games..why don't others get the blame? Stoudemire's D is just as bad, but he's defending Oberto/Thomas, so of course they aren't going to light him up..Nash was the only reason they were competitive in the OT's in game 1..give him some credit for leading the Suns these past few years..imagine where they would be without him..

as for TP, he is what he is..he's the quickest guard in the NBA and the best layup finisher in the L IMO..he's improved his passing a lot, but he isn't a Paul or Nash or Kidd in that category, that just isn't his game..he's erratic when he's off, just like Manu..but we live with it, because they're both amazing when they're on..he's one of the best 1-man fastbreaks in the NBA..

Parker's D is average at best IMO, and he's masked by the rest of the Spurs..same with Finley..the difference is that he's really quick, so he'll have his moments where he can stay with most PG's..

he obviously benefits a lot from Duncan, but nobody is expecting TP to be a #1 option or anything..Nash has been a #1 option in years past, so he's already proven himself..

Tony is great, but he isn't Nash..

If Parker wasnt with Duncan he wouldnt even come close to the discussion on who's the top 5 PG's in the NBA. If Nash was with Duncan they'd be OVERWHELMING favorites to win the title every year. Parker's a great penetrator, but after that hes pretty much average at everything else. Without Duncan he isnt coming close to the ridiculous points in the paint he puts up every year as well.

If the Suns had a defensive presence at the small forward position, ala Marion, then Nash would be looking a lot better then he does right now. Its their team defense that is lacking and its not completly Nash's fault. Marion was able to at least play solid defense on Parker, but now they have to pick their poison between Parker and Manu because they only have one big time defender in their lineup.

If Tony Parker demonstrates a consistent mid-range game (like he did in Game 2 against the Suns) and improves his defense, this comparison will be a lot closer.

Parker was part of a team that one those things (except for the Finals MVP, of course); that doesn't make him individually a better player than Nash.

He's one helluva player though.

On another note, the Suns are a really good team. If they were in the East, they'd probably be the #2 team in the conference and likely cruising to the ECF. It's hard to blame Nash for the 0-2 series so far, considering who they're playing.

The OP is a Nash/Suns hater, so this thread comes as no surprise.

point guards that can shoot and pass extremely well are few and far between. whereas penetrating guards that drive and kick come a dime a dozen.

now granted guards like AI, Parker, Monta etc are the best at that style of ball, the very fact that so many guards pattern themselves after that style of play makes it so folks don't necessarily appreciate just how phenomenal these players are.

as for defense, is there a star point guard in the league that excels offensively who is ALSO a good defender?

for the most part point guards in this league are pretty mediocre on defense. every team thus trys to counterbalance that with a good team defense. teams like phoenix don't do such a great job hiding nash's deficiencies, whereas teams like san antonio are great at hiding the fact that parker is a horrible on the ball defender.

personally i think parker is a more useful guard, and overall better player, but thats primarily because I think the traditional guard thing is over-rated.
