He's going to spend the next couple of years trading expiring contracts for good players that bad teams want to stop paying (like Gasol this year), and the Knicks are going to take off.

Oh well, we're in the quagmire already, and I'm not sure Walsh was the guy who was going to lead us out.

I'm not sure the guy who is going to lead us out is yet on the premises.

I'm outsider down there (Utah fan from Russia), so If I, in any case, do not follow forum policy let me apologize.

The question is - how do you rate Jermaine O'Neal relationships with Isiah? Do you think he likes him enough to move to NY?
What does Walsh signing make for the Jermaine to NY rumors? I read that O'Neal really respect Walsh.

Walsh wants to get rid of salary, not take on more. His goal is to get under the salary cap.

JO (mysteriously) has a fabulous relationship with Isiah. He would play in New York, but I doubt that the Pacers and the Knicks are real strong trading partners. It's possible, but I can't see Donnie converting Marbury's expiring contract into JO, given his injury issues.

1. Based on his track record and all that, who do you think he would take with the 5th pick? (give a top 2)

2. Does he really like players like Curry, Randolph, and/or Crawford?

3. What kind of team do you think he will build?

1. It's likely he'll go with a Mayo or Lopez, but he's not afraid to reach for someone he really likes. He got burned not taking the player he wanted with the Pacers before (think Freddie Jones over Tayshaun Prince), and I think he'll take the guy he wants. I wonder if he might not reach for a guy like Randolph.

2. Almost certainly not. However, the danger with Walsh is that he tends to emphasize the positives with almost everyone. Curry, Randolph, and Crawford all have good qualities, and the risk is that Donnie will put a little too much faith in those overriding the other problems these guys have. (That's what happened with Tinsley and Artest.) In this case, I do think he'll try and move these guys. Again, he's pretty singed from the last few years with the Pacers.

3. It will be interesting to see what he does with a big budget. The Pacers never played much in the Free Agent market, so he tried to build deep, talented teams that lacked mega-stars. I suspect he'll try and do that in NY, but may be more likely to go "Marquee" hunting given the market itself and the money available to him.

Walsh is a wizard at getting by with what's on hand. Think of him as one of those independent movie directors who makes great movies on a shoe string. Some guys like that can make the leap to big budget stuff and still do quality. Other guys end up spending on all the FX and make incoherent, crappy movies. I don't know which Donnie will end up doing.

1. I don't think you can assume anything on his drafting habits in the past. He's been across the board. He's taken guys that were developed like Erick Dampier, and he's also fallen in love at times with guys oozing full of potential like Bender and Harrington. He's taken guys at positions of need in some drafts, and in others he's taken the best player available. Honestly, Donnie Walsh is one of the hardest guys to read in the draft.

2. I don't think it matters whether or not he likes them. If he thinks they can contribute, he'll keep them unless he gets a great deal. If they're punks, he'll likely hold on to them a bit too long and then move them.

3. He'll essentially try to build a tough veteran team, with constant splashes of youth and energy at all times to learn from the smart veterans.

One thing that seems more unlikely now is that the Pacers and Knicks will be trading partners? But maybe not - the Warriors/Bobcats trade of Jason happened when Higgins left the Warriors for a position with the Cats.
