Lakers definately.

And without Pippen (or some other second star), they don't have (as) much Finals success. :-?

Its very close for the top 2. Also the OP could correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that since he states since 85. he means the first season to be considered is 85-86.

1. Lakers. LA has won 5 championships, 8 finals appearances, 10 conference finals appearances and only missed the playoffs.

2. Bulls: While Chicago has won the most championships and had the highest peak during this stretch, they missed the playoffs seven times and failed to advance in the playoffs nine times.

3. Detroit: Detroit has been the winners of 3 championships and having appeared in 2 other finals which they lost in heartbreaking fashion. Finally they have appeared in 10 conference finals. You can make a strong case that had Detroit gotten a few more breaks in 88 and 05 they would be the most successful team in the league.

4. Spurs: The Spurs are a step below the Lakers and Bulls, but have still enjoyed great success over this stretch. They have won 4 championships, and been to 6 conference finals.

5. Houston: The rockets have won back to back championships, one other finals and conference finals appearance. But they have also missed the playoffs 6 times and been eliminated in the first nine times (ten after Utah finishes them off).

Here is where its gets interesting.

6. Utah: Two finals appearances, 6 times in the conference finals, Utah has only missed the playoffs three times and only had to suffer through one team that lost more than 50.

7. Miami: Unlike Utah the Heat have won a championship but I still have to rate them below the Jazz. They have missed the playoff eight times and only been out of the first round on five occasions. Three times they have seasons worst they 60 losses, so even with the one championship I would put them below Utah.

why Bulls so low? 6 titles, 10 consecutive conference semis, all time record for wins in a season, 72 wins and 69 wins.... i think they are head and shoulder with Los Angeles, and Pistons shouldnt be number 2.

LA is the easy choice for me. 6 titles, 3 other finals appearances, and only missed the playoffs twice.

The Bulls are really an interesting case. A few mediocre years, then a few good years, then 6 titles in 8 years, then 6 years of nothing. Then the hard-to-interpret recent period. If you value consistency a little more, you could drop them below the Spurs and Pistons.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Lakers and Bulls have both won 6 titles in that time span but for the Lakers they made the finals 3 more times. The Bulls went on a dry spell from 1999-2004 where they didn't make the playoffs.

Yeah, it was a mistake. I counted the 99 title, but forgot that they'd won 3 recently instead of just 2.

Spurs (most consistent and won championships in late 90s and 00s)
Lakers (consistent in the late 80s and early 90s as well as late 90s and early 00s)
Bulls (owned the 90s)
Pistons (won in 90s and 00s)
Rockets (won back to back in 90s
Jazz (been consistent for 20 years)

in that order
