Carlos Boozer: Unnatural Basketball Move = Flagrant 2?

Post#1 » by TiMacMania » Fri Apr 25, 2008 3:19 pm

Someone care to explain why Boozer's elbow to Landry's face wasn't a flagrant 2 warranting suspension?

This was the exact same "unnatural" basketball move that got Kobe Bryant suspended last year:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6FOsBjD ... 355&page=1

If you watch the NBA recap http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/nba...p173_houuta.asx it is pretty clear to me that this was intentional. Nobody who is going for a rebound that is ABOVE them is going to swing their arms to the SIDE, away from the ball. Its even clearer that the motion isn't natural or accidental because only Boozer's RIGHT arm swings (the one smashing Landry's grill), while his left arm stays relatively still. I understand not catching it during the game because it was very quick, but any reasonable interpretation of this action HAS to conclude that it was intentional. Big men like to clear space when they are rebounding and that's fine, but a foul is a foul and when it is unnecessary, it warrants a flagrant; when it's excessive (i.e. taking a key player out of the game) it warrants suspension.

I know Landry wasn't upset about it after the game because he's a good sport, but he also didn't see the hit in slow motion. Sometimes the Rockets are just too nice and rarely complain about calls, but their respect for officials sure hasn't been currying any favor. I'd love to see them lobby for this foul to get upgraded to at least a Flagrant 1 just for the principle of recognizing that Landry was fouled out there and didn't lose his tooth magically, if not a 2 warranting suspension.

remember that no foul was called...

A flagrant foul-penalty (1) is unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent.

A flagrant foul-penalty (2) is unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent. It is an unsportsmanlike act and the offender is ejected immediately.

Can we get a video of the alleged incident? All that link shows is Kobe's previous gaffes.

Heh, wow, a fan of the winning team creates another thread to whine about the refs.

How amusing.

Yeah, I can remember about a half a dozen they missed against the Jazz in Game 2.

Yet I don't remember any Jazz fans creating a therad crying about them. Why? Because the Jazz won the damn game.

Just because a team wins a game doesn't mean they don't have the right to be upset with the officiating. I'm sure if they lost they'd probably be called sore losers.

They're consistantly sore, win or lose.

No fouls occur in Utah. Flagrant or otherwise.

I don't think Boozer meant to swing his arm like that; he was just hustling for a rebound. I wouldn't mind if he got a suspension though :)

  Really ?
I have to disagree with you on that .
I dont know who's a bigger whinner ....... Utah or Suns fans .

Every single game you guys are complaining about everything from reffs to the price of gas .

The O.P does have a valid reason .

Look at the video , when I saw the replay last night , it did look intentional .

The unnatural basketball move rule only applies to Kobe.

Kobe does that to create contact after the shot in case he misses he can bait an official into a foul call.

Glad to see him get t'd up for it.

since I have no video of the Boozer play, I couldn't tell ya.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

The thing that pisses me off about this whole "unnatural basketball move" business is that Kobe fans know it was totally bogus in the first place, yet they want the same ridiculous suspension to be applied in a million different places where it shouldn't be.

when i saw it live, it looked intentional to me. landry was the closest player, boozer had seen him seconds before turning, and he lifted his arm to keep landry out. in fact, very similar to the scola foul on kirilenko, except scola didnt get him in the face, and landry didnt flop like AK.

i guess boozer is just living up to that malone part 2 billing.
