Is the Maverick's window closed?
They tanked the playoffs last year.
They look like they'll suffer the same fate this year.
The Jason Kidd trade looks like it backfired.
Should they look to rebuild?

Tough to say.
I'm inclined to think they have enough value left on that roster they could shake things up a bit and possibly be back in the thick of things in the next year or two...but they gave up so much to Kidd they aren't as well positioned as they once were.
The Kidd trade really came a year or two late and they are going to pay the price for that. I don't think it's entirely fair to blame Avery though. Wasn't he just everybodies darling a year ago? I still think he's a very good coach, but the team is mentally soft. And I don't care who the coach is, you aren't going to turn Dirk into Tim Duncan.

Dallas is exited in the first round for the second straight year. I called it that the Kidd trade was the end for Dallas. Harris would've been more effective on containing Paul. Kidd is washed up defensively. He is getting his ass served to him on a plate by Paul. He is underutilized in the Mavericks' system. He is a player who makes a living on the fast break yet Dallas runs iso after iso. This is the last year Dallas plays in April. Book it.

As long as Dirk is still in his prime they won't miss the playoffs .
Dallas problem is they don't have a 2nd option and as long as they don't get it from somewhere they won have success . Howard will never be a 2nd option and Terry is not consistent enough .
They need somebody reliable next to Dirk . I don't know if they can aquire that kind of player this offseason but without that guy they'll never win it all.

Possibly true. It goes to that old adage; offensive wins games but defense wins championships. Dirk is the sorta guy that can win regular season games. The Mavs should still be a 50 win team. But they will likely be a one and done team.Serpo wrote:As long as Dirk is still in his prime they won't miss the playoffs .

+1, Because they really don't use him, mostly because Dirk gets in shooting rythm by running isolations, which is the point of why Kidd was brought to Dallas for.
Devin Harris could defend better, score better, and he was very very young and had lots of upside. Yes he could distribute, but he really matched what Dallas needed. He got injured, they freaked out, and went out for Kidd.

Well I think Kidd was brought in because Cuban saw other teams seemingly upgrading their rosters and he figured that he needed to do so as well if he wanted to compete. Unfortunately, he's not a real GM, so I don't think he really took "fit" into account.

Most definitely not, but he was the only owner with Paul Allen with cojones to say no to the relocation of the Sonics franchise.
But truly, the team doesn't really occupy Kidd, and they just didn't realize that the rest of the team wouldn't adapt to Kidd, they just expect Kidd to adapt to them and it kinda happened, but that means that the holes that he is meant to fill, won't be filled. He becomes more useless than Devin Harris.

It could be I'm remembering wrong, but wasn't Howard the Mavs best player against Golden State last year?
IMO the biggest problem on the Mavs is lack of a real interior presence at either end of the floor. That's why I found moving Diop in the Kidd trade so horrible. I mean, he's nothing special, but they weakend an already soft frontline.
A big reason for why the Warriors eliminated the Mavs last year, aside from Baron, was because the Mavs were unable to punish them for going small. Hell, they actually went small themselves.

Cuban's deep pockets, and a very good franchise player in Dirk.
They'll stay good -- top 6 West -- but 60+ win years are over, 55+ wins are doubtful.
Avery Johnson has to be #1 on the hit list of changes to be made.
How important is a coach in a championship contender? Think about it. I'm going to start a thread about it.
