Who is better right now? Not who will be better.
Obviously the Mavs traded Harris and others for Kidd, while Kidd seems completely useless out there; almost a liability. I am convinced Harris would do a better a job than Kidd on both the offense and defensive ends. Kidd at this point in his career doesn't have the ability to stay with quicker younger guards, while Harris on the other hand has all the quickness in the world to stick with whomever. Offensively ever since the Mavs have traded for Kidd teams have been baiting Kidd to try to beat them. Harris is highly capable on the offensive end with his ability to break down defenses and get easy baskets going to the rim. Kidd is capable offensively of well? um leading the break? getting the offense set? anything else really?

Kidd is better. You're basing his play solely on how he's played in Dallas' "offense" (if you want to call it that), while he clearly showed in New Jersey that he has a lot left in the tank.
Also while Kidd can't guard the speed demons out there, Harris can't guard the bigger guards out there so it really evens out. Kidd's team / help defense is also vastly superior to Harris'...
Keep in mind I'm saying all this despite being a Nets fan who is happy with Harris' play.

Harris would be better with the Mavs, but I find Harris to be overrated..and I like the Nets and go to their games every once in a while..I think he's a good player, but definitely overrated on RealGM..
how is Kidd supposed to "adapt"? he's playing in a system that actually PLAYS TO HIS WEAKNESSES, instead of his strength..Kidd has never been a good shooter/scorer, so why didn't Avery adjust the system, since they gave up so much to acquire him?..what good has this system done? Dirk is a great scorer, so he'll get his either way..but I'd rather adjust my system to fit Kidd, as opposed to Howard struggling like he has in a system that fits him better..
Kidd is still a solid player..great help D, arguably the best passer in the NBA..he can still defend SG's and bigger PG's very effectively..no non-scorer is going to be effective in a system that doesn't fit them..
Harris is a good player, but I questioned him a lot during Nets games..I see the potential, but his D was definitely worse with NJ(probably due to focusing on offense more) and he chucked up a lot of bad shots during that time..his passing also needs work..

Kidd is best on the break, and playing with serious athlete's who he can throw alleys too. The Mavs depend on players creating their own offense, and when they set up plays, it's generally an easy pass to a jump shooter, not a nice pace to a cutter. They are just a terrible fit for Kidd. Furthermore, the Mavs really lack slashing, so losing Harris was a big loss. Kidd used to be a great defender, but Harris is very good as well, and at this point in Kidd's career, Harris is a better defender as he's much quicker.
On a team like Denver, Kidd would be a much better PG than Harris, but for the Mavs, I'd rather have Harris. Even a straight up deal of Harris + filler for Kidd would have been bad for the Mavs, especially since Harris is sooooo much younger. Add in Diop and the two 1sts (that 2010 1st could be a very high pick, easily top 10), and this deal is terrible.
