I think Skiles is top 10 coach in NBA but I would like to see other opinions about this. Here is my list of top 10:
Phill Jackson
Greg Popovich
Jerry Sloan
Rick Adelman
George Karl
Pat Riley
Don Nelson
Flip Sunders
SVG
Scott Skiles
Maybe not in that order. Your list?
Is Skiles top 10 coach in NBA? Where is he on your list?

avery johnson should also be ahead of skiles. even though they arent on teams right now, carlisle and brown r better than skiles. but after that, i dont see anyone who is better than skiles

I am on the fence with Avery Johnson. His offense is "give ball to Dirk and get out of his way". Mavs defense improved when he took over but that was also when they let Nash go. Last year he had more talent than GS and he failed to adjust. This year he failed to find a way to use Kidd. I don't know. He is good coach but not as good as Skiles IMO.

I have to have D'Antoni somewhere in my top 3. And the fact that I just read that he might be in trouble if they lose to SA is the most rediculous thing I've read in a long time.
I think it's debatable to have Karl and Nelson on that list. In my mind D'Antoni and Carlisle deserve those spots. I'd also consider putting Doc Rivers on there. I know he has 3 stars to work with but he has that team thinking defense first and has done a great job with some of the young talent.
Skiles deserves consideration in the top 10 and in my mind should make the list.

It's very hard to rank coaches. Was Larry Brown a great coach when he led Detroit to a title and then a terrible coach when he led the Knicks to the lottery?
Is D'Antoni a great coach given the talent he was handed on the team or do his teams underachieve because they never won the conference?
Flip is another guy that has won a lot of games when he has had talent but has never won a title.
Rivers is handed 3 superstars and wins. Big deal.

I agree that is difficult to gauge the ability of coaches in the NBA, much more so than in college hoops. In my opinion Sloan, Jackson and Popovich are the best current NBA coaches. Despite his lack of a championship, Sloan might be my favorite coach in the NBA. He has been able to keep the Jazz relevant even after the retirement of Stockton and Malone. He also led them to a .500 record several years ago when they had a fairly depleted roster. I mean Matt Harpring was a major contributer to that team, and Sloan still found a way to keep them in playoff contention throughout the year. I believe Skiles is a decent coach who has had two decent runs as a coach with the Bulls and Phoenix. The job he did with the Bulls was impressive. I will have a better idea where he ranks once he has a couple of years with the Bucks. If Skiles can turn around the team and get them to start playing defense he will move up the ranks in my mind.

I don't believe so... He's really never accomplished anything as a coach but pissing off some of his young talent because he's a hard ass...
Whether it was Steve Nash when he was an assistant in PHX, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion in PXH or not getting anything out of guys like Chandler or Tyrus- and then pissing off a Ben Gordon or a Ben Wallace because of his rules, I just don't think the guy is all that great..
He's had a couple nice seasons coaching, but nothing that should even remotely consider him a top 10 coach... Where has he been, what has he accomplished ??

I agree 100% with L&H.
He's lead two jumpshooting teams to a moderate degree of success for a couple years, before quitting on them both and leaving the teams in shambles. Along the way, he managed to alienate damn near every player who played under him.
But he does scowl alot. So he must be good.
