Yeah, I think everyone knew that was coming. Riles isn't gone, after all, just upstairs full-time (which actually makes me more confident about Miami's chances to turn things around).

"offensively, our system depends on personnel, we have a young, athletic, quick core group of guys (named specifically Dwyane, Dorrell, Daequan, Shawn), when healthy we can play at a quicker tempo and pace as long as it is efficient, attack earlier in the clock"

Also interesting; I like that he's looking to go for the quicker tempo stuff.

I heard the live stream on WQAM.com. They have a link there later if not already.

I think its safe to say this is a rebuilding team. Starting over the only player that should be safe is Wade, UD without Shaq doesn't really cut it as a starter.

I'm shocked to hear this happen but at the same time I'm excited about the changes that will be made in the way young players are handled.

the thing I worry about is that SVG and JVG were the assistant head coaches/top assistants...

Spoelstra was at the end of the bench. He was picked by Riley over the others, so that says something, but the fact that he doesnt have the exp like the others who emerged under RIley have is worrying

I hope it works. If not, we may need to leave the org which Riley does not like doing. And we better give him 2 FULL years.

Spoelstra was the lead assistant under Stan and under Pat after Stan
don't read anything into Rothstein pinch hitting, during the press conference, Riley said he didn't want Erik to be put in that position to be a pinch hitter

I think we'll know how much confidence Riley has in Spoelstra by the decision he makes with the draft pick:

If he trades the pick for a package including a star: Riley has great confidence in Spo's ability to turn the team into a winner again and make a strong playoff run.

If he keeps the pick (or trades down for more picks): Riley probably doesn't consider Spo ready to make a serious run in the East.

How he handles the Marion situation is something to keep an eye on too, I think.

mopper saw Spoelstra at a grocery store a couple years ago and stared at him for an uncomfortable amount of time, and he didn't have the fortitude to go up to him and say hello. The one that got away.
For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

As an objective observer, can I say Riley's reluctance to stick around when the times get tough really annoy me

He decided to come back and basically take the job from SVG right when the team was getting to contender status

Then decides to leave mid-season while the team is struggling to 'go scout college players'

and now resigns because his team was the worst in the NBA

It shows no toughness or leadership when your president can step in and do whatever he wants whenever he pleases.

Is this a fair assessment of the situation or am I just thinking about this too much?

SVG still admits to this day Riley didn't push him out, after Shaq was traded the local writers hinted Shaq made SVG's life so miserable, that it was taking a toll on his marriage and his wife made him quit

he missed like 3 games at the END of the season when the Heat were already guaranteed most losses, don't exaggerate, and most, if not all local fans didn't care by that point

he resigns because the team is bad, but also because he is 64 and not in the mood to do it anymore after 25 years, and a fresh start is coming with a high draft pick and no Shaq, is that his prerogative?

As Lane already said, "ich libschaft kleiner." Many writers have stated that Shaq forced SVG out by lack of respect. Apparently among many other things, Shaq would directly refer to SVG as Ron Jeremy in front of other players and coach Stan. Eventually, Stan had enough and quit.

If you remember, Stan quit after the season where we were up on Detroit in the ECF. We were on a collision coarse with the Finals and then Wade pulled a muscle and we were screwed the rest of the series. Detroit subsequently came back and won the ECF.

So Riley didn't come back right when we were getting to contender status, we were already there and barring Wade's injury, would have been in the finals the year before. I honestly believe Shaq's fat arse is the reason we lost stan, not Riley. Pat knew we were going to struggle this year (albeit not this badly) with the loss of key players, Wade coming off double surgeries and Shaq's rapid decline. He hung in there and finished out this miserable season when he didn't have to. I don't think you'll find many around here that don't think highly of the guy.
