Mcgrady says Deke Should Have Been in the Game

The Rockets had just lost to the Jazz 86-82 on Saturday night when Tracy McGrady publicly called out coach Rick Adelman. McGrady was asked how Mehmet Okur had been allowed to grab a key rebound on a missed free throw with around six seconds remaining and the Rockets down two. When the shot went up, Carl Landry and McGrady had inside position on Okur. First, McGrady critiqued Landry. "I hit the ball off the glass, and Carl just mistimed it," McGrady said. If he had to say something, it might be about how he didn't block out Okur, or how he should have grabbed the rebound. Instead, he pointed to Adelman. "That was the point where Dikembe (Mutombo) and those guys should have been in the game, because we would have called a timeout had we gotten the rebound." Moments earlier, Adelman had second-guessed himself about not having Mutombo in the game. He said he had considered it, but that he decided to stick with his "two most athletic guys." Ironically, Adelman had used much of his news conference to defend McGrady.

I don't agree with T-Mac making this statement publicly. Adelman could have said some negative things about him as well. Nobody is perfect. He has been playing well for the most part but there are definitely some things you could point to that he could and should be doing better. The more I think about this, the more I really hate that he said this.

I was screaming for Mutombo the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. It pissed me off when Deron got those 2 drives (1 dunk) on Rafer and there was no help defense. In that situation, Dikembe could have been perfect, and it wasn't like Boozer was really scoring. It really pissed me off more when we couldn't get that rebound at the end. Adelman doesn't do a good job of substituting in my opinion. Like Kenny Smith said "If you are lose the game by 10+ it's the players faults (they didn't show up to play), but if you lose by within 7, it's a coach's fault." I agree with that quote 100%.

But you shouldn't associate losers to women.

BTW, McGrady should just stfu, and let his game do that talking. He's talking way too much... someone needs to seal his mouth.

Two things. 1) Playoffs are a filled of 'what ifs'. No need to hindsight everything.

2) McGrady needs to understand that in all honesty..he if he was just a notch better of a basketball player we would have won games 2 and 4. Over matched usually means you are being blown out and have no chance to win. But when your star player is sitting on 20 points and its a close game. You expect you star player to push and score 10 more and get 30 b/c thats just what stars do.

I do think McGrady says a lot of questionable things to the media, and this may very well be one of them (albeit, not the worst he's ever said).

Still, for all we know, Adelman might have acknowledge to the team (in the locker room immediately after the game) that he second-guessed his decision and that he took responsibility for it.

If so, McGrady might have simply been reiterating that concept in the interview and if so, I doubt it would be causing the coach any grief.

I know thats all speculation, but just trying to remind that we aren't privy to all that goes on and you know what they say about assumptions.

First the columnist betrays an incredible amount of ignorance or he just wanted to rip McGrady. Finally watched the last Q on tape and it's Landry,Okur on one side and McGrady,Boozer,Battier on the other,so exactly how is McGrady supposed to block out OKUR?
Very bad strategy by Adelman as when has McGrady ever been on the blocks like that?When they go small it's Battier and Landry/Scola/Hayes. Perhaps Rick was afraid Utah would foul immediately,but at least Battier should have been on inside against Boozer.
As I write this I have VCR freeze-framed as ball is just about to hit rim. Okur has been rooting out Landry w/his forearm and bulk and Landry is almost under basket. On the other side w/a ref just a few feet away the real foul is happening. Boozer shoves McGrady w/both hands and pushes McGrady under the basket,past Landry and 1/2way past backboard. Battier,instead of going for the rebound,drops back to block out Williams who's frozen at the FT line. We'll never know,but if Battier was on the inside position and felt the shove,being experienced at that situation,he may well have launched himself,flailing his arms and selling a foul to the ref. Instead Okur,Landry and McGrady jump for the ball. Okur is reaching past Landry for ball when McGrady stretches and taps it against backboard and for the first half of his jump he's being shoved by Boozer while the ref looks on.Okur sure looks like he was reaching to tap it up. At no point is Landry's hand higher than Okurs. When McGrady taps it Landry's hands are starting to descend.McGrady ends up out-jumping Landry by over a foot.When Landry lands he falls/twists away to his right taking him out of position. Okur makes an incredibly quick second jump as the ball bounces towards him.
I'm fine w/no foul on Okur,he used his forearm initially,but that's pretty standard and he went up fairly straight,kills me but that was a good no call. BUT... Boozer shoved McGrady TWICE w/extended arms w/a ref watching and that's the friggin' crime.
