3 second rule.

Post#1 » by magickingdom » Wed Apr 30, 2008 6:25 pm

As for this rule and all the times it was called on Howard. Did anyone catch the Suns\Spurs game. There was one play where Shaq fell down and the ball went to the Spurs end of the court. Shaq never even made it back on defense. So the ball comes back to the Suns end and there is Shaq standing in the paint. The ball travels the length of the court, the Suns run their play and Shaq stands in the paint. And does not even get called for 3 seconds. We need those Refs.

it's a judgment call, truth is there are legit 3 second calls on just about every sequence during a game...I hate the rule on both ends and have hated it long before Dwight Howard was the #1 leader in this category...

with all the things that refs have to pay attention to, this seems like one of the hardest for them. they usually call it when one of the coaches or players complains about it and they keep an extra eye on it that possession.

Horrible rule. Actually rewards poor offense.

Funny cuz the rule was put in action to counter Shaq's overpowering skills, he used to stay under the basket and walk right on everyone back in LA.

These days it's so on/off it's crazy: sometimes a player stands there for days and no whistle. But it's the refs and most of them (IMO) hardly know the rules, see also the travels, on Hedo for example, the touch rules etc.

I've disliked the rule for a very long time now.

They need to get rid of it.

If they didnt have this rule players like dwight duncan and other dominant bigmen would be unstoppable.

The offensive 3 second rule is sometimes a necessary evil.

The defensive 3 second rule is overkill because of how it gets enforced.

Neither one is enforced accurately.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

Err... The 3 second rule was implemented in the NBA to stop George Mikan dominating... it was around a long time before Shaq was even born.

Well here is the good news people the League Office has finally changed the 3 second rule. Details can be found at the NBA.com site.
