Call me crazy ?
I went to the espn trade machine and this went through as succesful.
Howard / Terry / Stackhouse / Kidd go to Cleveland
for
Ilgauskas / J. Smith / Szczerbiak / D. Jones / Snow
On the surface I believe that Cleveland gets the better end of this deal talent wise. (Maybe you disagree) Anyways with Ilgauskas we would actually have a scoring option at the center position, Joe Smith would be a pretty good back up PF and Szcerzbiak isn't a bad shooter plus Szcerzbiak, Smith, Snow & Jones contracts would all come off the books next year and we would also have our 2009 pick.
Would the Mavs do this deal or Cleveland ?
Just trying to find a way to rebuild without losing Dirk and not just becoming the Mavs of the 90's all over again

I realize we would be weak at the point guard position but we would get a quality center and after next season we would have a lot of salaries off the books plus the 09 draft pick. Short term it sucks for the Mavs but I dont think Howard is worth keeping and your not going to get much for him anways so why not rebuild by getting expiring contracts a quality center and then the one year we actually do have a pick we could get a point guard, all the while keeping Dirk.

That trade sucks for the Mavs, three of those guys can't defend and the two bigs are next to being done. And just to let you know Snow is going to retire after the season.

I can understand not liking it but what is Stack giving us ? anybody still feel comfortable with Howard as our second scoring option, I dont really like giving up Terry but I was trying to look long term for salaries, and Kidd, I'm a big Kidd fan but I didn't see anything that he has left. Over all talent yes Cleveland benefits short term but when we have cap space, Dirk, our 09 pick Ilgauskas, Damp as his back up and Bass I'll take my chances with that. Like I said call me crazy !

I am so glad you arent in the Mavs front office... Its obvious you arent a business major. Cleveland absolutely rapes us in this trade.

Dumping salaries is the point, it gives you a chance to rebuild and quickly. If you think that the Mavs are going to get any better with this core I would like to know how thats going to happen with an aging point guard who cant score, two brick layers in Howard & Stack. Like I said before I'm not crazy about giving up Terry but how do you expect to rebuild with a team that is way over the salary cap, no picks, old, and cant shoot. I could care less about the players we get back it's about 09 in my opinion.

I am somewhat a fan of tank next season to get a good pick. The thought behind that though is that your team is better than the tanking they are going to do. We need to be very competative in the 09-10 season so our pick given to the Nets doesn't make me go crazy.
Another option is to trade Kidd and Dirk for a ton of picks, get a really good college player evaluator and in the next few years ignore the games in teh NBA and attend tons of College games.
Josh Howard's trade value is key here for the third offseason option. If we can get really good value in return for him this team can be salvaged with a few trades. I'm thinking Josh and Stack are the main concerns on this team as far as big time contributors, (I use contributors loosly when talking about Stack) the bench needs a huge facelift minus Bass! The bench needs a facelift, but they need quality not quantity.
Bass is the only bench player that I'd retain. JET is another that if you can get a better bargain from him then you deal him in the offseason.
