The Hawks have attempted 50 more free throws in this series than the Celtics. For all us math wizes thats an average of a possible 10 points a game.
Thats huge in a series that could end up going seven games. Does everyone feel that the Hawks are taking the ball to the basket that much more than the C's.
I honestly dont believe so all im saying is that usually when both teams are equally aggressive the free throws are usually much more similar in attempts.
The numbers back my point! Its not like the C's are jump shot happy.
Points in the paint this series:::
Hawks = 172
Celtics = 178

Game 4 was terrible. I know the aggressive team gets calls but the officials took it to a new low. The C's got absolutely NO calls and they were purposely attacking the rim. Pierce, Rondo, and KG all had plays where they were clearly fouled and got nothing. Which is fine, except that on the other end every ticky tack thing was being called. It was pretty ridiculous.
Give the hawks credit, tho, they've been making their FTs

Yet a jump shooting team has more points in the paint? HRRRRRRRRM. Something is a bit suspect there.

So, we have Boston with more points in the paint, but a tremendous differential in free throw attempts to ATL... not to mention a complete BS 25,000 dollar fine on the team's leading scorer AND Stern attending a game in ATL when the biggest margin of FT attempts occurred, KG gets headbutted with no repercussion, and ATL wins the game...
Would someone objectively try and explain this crap?

You forgot about the shot clock in game 3...and the 24 second Horn Blower in game 4....pretty amateur stuff.

Ya know thinking about it, the reason for the C's leading points in the paint could be that they don't count FTs made after a foul in the paint. Considering the discrepancy of FTs for the Cs, and their lead in points in the paint, the only logical explanation I can think of is ATL is driving more the Boston, and getting fouled more as well. How else would they have less points in the paint and more FTs?

its pretty simple. the nba is not about good basketball. it is about selling sensational basketball entertainment. drawing out the series makes more money for the league. the fine, the head but all that gets to be part of the soap opera narratives that commentators like to talk about. bad officiating, and "superstars" conspire to turn games from a natural competition into a farce. the NBA is a few degrees removed from theater wrestling and each year inches closer.

This is what I've been saying, the reffing has been bad for both teams, except for game 4 when it was really one-sided (home cooking....)
But again you're right, Boston (especially Pierce) has been horrendous from the free throw line and Atlanta hits almost all of them.
We better nip this in the bud or else it could come back to haunt us...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

No not a conspiricy........but 50 more FT's attempted is a pretty significant number. The C's are taking it to the rim and not getting to the line, mayb they have to sell the foul like Manu or Kobe.

rsceltic, i thought this was your final score prediction for tonight when the Celtics win their first road game of the playoffs
kidding aside, this only shows how slashing and location of mismatches is an essential part of the hawks game. look at their starting lineup... three f'in swingmen (SF outruns PF, SF overmatches C's SG, SF beats bad-back SF)

HAHA maybe ill have to change my opening statement.

No I understand they are a slashing team that gives us matchup problems. Smith is crazy athletic Williams aslo, and Childress off the bench is aslo a hard slasher. I understand fully them having more FT's than us. However I could see something like 20-25 more attempts but 50 is just too many.

For all I care they can shoot 2000 more FTs if the Celtics win. A win is a win is a win. FT attempts are only a meaningless number when we move on to the next round tonight, and they're fishing.

There has been a noticable change in how the officials have been reffing during the playoff and its been inexcusable as its been a 180 from the regular season and a regression to past years which is hurting the C's style of defense and favoring the Hawks. They are no longer giving the defense the charge call. There probably has been an average of 5 calls per game that would have been a charge on Atlanta but instead resulted in a wimpy foul on Boston with the Celtic's player getting clobbered. This has fed into Atlanta's aggressiveness and has been Boston laying on its back on the floor.
At the other end, the refs are allowing Atlanta's shot blockers to completely take out a guys body if he gets his hand on the ball. This is obviously affecting Rondo and Garnett as they can no longer make a layup. Game 4, showed Rondo wincing when he threw up a short floater in the lane, and no one even hit him.
This hasn't been any favoritism by the refs, just a change that the C's may not be able to adapt to. They are not a shot blocking team, but instead have players mostly that are wide and stuck to the floor. The blocking foul calls have been horrible calls, but it may continue throughout the whole playoffs.
Just curious, has a Tibadou (sp) team advance far in the playoffs before?
