How to combat Hack-a-Shaq

Post#1 » by enigmatics » Fri May 2, 2008 6:00 am

............ somebody in the general forum just made an excellent point. Aside from depending on Shaq to focus on being a better free throw shooter - the key to making teams pay is having somebody else who can make them pay by getting us to the line. Shaq had two guys, Kobe and Wade, who could make teams pay for wasting fouls.....effectively putting them in the penalty quicker. We on the otherhand simply kept up with our jump shooting routine.

Suddenly a guy like Maggette seems a bit more attractive to me.

It's not possible to defend hack-a-shaq unless Shaq makes his FTs or you take him out.

Teams use useless players to foul Shaq anyways and it wouldn't matter if you have a player like Corey to draw fouls because they foul Shaq before anyone can do anything else.

Yep. That point is worthless. They'll wrap up that fat tub of lard regardless of who has the ball.

Exactly. It's Shaq's problem (and every poor free throw shooter)...

I was listening to Gambo and Ash (phoenix sports talk radio hosts). They had an idea that D'Antoni should have done hack-a-Duncan with Marks and Pike. I hate looking at woulda, coulda, shoula's, but would this have stopped POP from continuing this strategy?

Stern wants to bring it back to the 80's with Lakers vs Celts. I think that is the Finals matchup

Does anyone understand how someone who's clearly talented with the ball can shoot significantly worse FT% than *I* do, even though I took my *first* free throw in nearly a decade not six months ago?

How is this possible?

If you were the coach and knew you couldn't play him at the end of each quarter, what do you do?

Easy, play him for the first 6 minutes or so of each quarter and that's it. No Shaq at the end of quarters = no hack-a-Shaq. Oh, the genius!

He shouldn't be playing more than around 25mpg anyway.

To me, you don't have to be an NBA coach to figure that one out.

Yeah easy no team is going to want to foul shaq if they aren't in the penalty and its not a shooting foul.

I find it sad that I'm a worse FT shooter than Shaq  ... I just don't shoot well if I have to stand still. I'm much better at getting a shot to go in(and much better still implies like <40% overall) if I'm moving and don't have to have my feet set.

But yeah, the fact that he's had his entire career to work on his FT shooting and hasn't...that's ridiculous.

Mike should've called stern and tell him the next nationaly televised game will be 4 hours since he'll use 36 bench fouls to hack bowen and duncan, no matter what the score is.
the horrible reviews will cause the rule change overnight.

The problem is, that Duncan makes most of his FTs.

take shaq out when the other team is in penalty..but you will need a decent post defender.. NOT diaw (should be playing forward)..

The point of the OP is that while teams would hack a Shaq anyway. This will get them to the penalty sooner. Then a player who forces them to foul by driving to the hole (ala Wade) will result in free throws for that player because the other team is over the limit. i.e. you get free throws whether the foul was a shooting foul or not.

This is what the Mavricks foolishly did in the finals. The doubled Shaq and hacked him the whole series. They didn't seem to notice that this was a benefit to Wade as he could drive recklessly to the basket and get rewarded everytime

The logical solution would be Shaq learning to shoot, but that will never happen.

you do it only once, to make it a "classic" - the worst game in nba history. and make sure it's on national tv (abc) or something. you don't care if you're gonna win or lose the game. you do it to make a point: this is not basketball and they should change the rule about it.

after a 5 hour game ending with 100 fouls or something (once all your players fouled out, they stay in the game but cost you additional free throw, which you don't mind because you don't mind losing this regular season game), stern will be ashamed he didn't change the rule before that.
