Duncan/Kobe/Shaq and the others of this era..

Post#1 » by HarlemHeat37 » Fri May 2, 2008 8:53 pm

I've seen a few people on the PC board complain that old timers get too much love on the all-time ranks and that the best players of this era get underrated in the comparisons..

do you find that those 3 in particular(the 3 best of this era) and others from this era, are underrated when they are compared to the all-time greats from the 60's to the 90's? or even overrated? or ranked well?..

i think kobe is given a little more love by a lot of people than he probably deserves, Shaq seems to be rated either too highly or too lowly. The only player that I feel is consistently severely underrated when it comes to ranking all time greats is Tim Duncan.

Really depends on whose doing the ratings. I'll use TD as an example Some poster claimed that if TD gets two more rings he'll be equal to Mike, if you think that your substantially overrating MJ. Another poster called TD a rich man's Terry Cummings, substantially underrating Duncan.

I can't respond in regards to the players of the 60's and 70's because I was too young.

As far as the players of now compared to the players of the 80's and early 90's however, I would say the star players of now are overrated. The players from the 80's (Bird, Jordan, Magic, etc...) could have made LeBron, KG, or any other star in todays game look like didn't know how to play basketball.

With all the rule changing that allows guys like Lebron and Wade to go Havoc with just attacking the basket really makes it easy to overrate them.

Duncan on the other hand is so easy to underrate because he's not really spectacular . He's just playing extremely fundamental but he's just so good .
People just don't appreciate him enough.

They are ranked pretty well right now by most.

I like Duncan a lot. I remember watching him play at Wake Forest and I said that kid is going to be great in the NBA when he gets there. It only helped that he had "The Admiral" David Robinson along side of him his first few years to teach him the ropes. But of all players in the NBA that play the game the way it is supposed to be played, then Duncan deserves a lot more credit than he receives.

Most consider Duncan the #1 Power Forward of all time. How is that underrated?

I judge players (in a historical context atleast) by acomplishments. And with that said I think it's a damn shame that Shaq and Duncan are so underrated from a all time perspective. We can whine and argue all day about who played better then who when we mention guys like Moses, Drob, and Ewing, but at the end of the day there are not ten players who have acomplished more then Duncan and Shaq. Maybe Shaq didn't play D like Hakeem. Maybe Duncan doesn't score like he did, but when you look at what they have acomplished with the skill sets they have I think people are crazy when they say the three can't be compared. I hate Shaq but to rank Hakeem higher then Shaq on the list of centers is just stupid.
Now Kobe is where it's different imo. I think because he plays so similar to Jordan people jump to conclusions and act as if the two are comparable but in reality even if you were high enough to believe that Kobe and MJ were just as good, MJ has acomplished far more things then Kobe as a NBA player and although Kobe might be better then he was Jerry Wes has too.

All of them are underrated. Even without a FT shot, Shaq is still, IMO, a top 2 big man of all time and I am a Shaq hater. Duncan is the best PF of all time. Kobe is the second best SG of all time.

People overrate players from the 60's-80's players far too much. When it's said and done, these 3 players will join the ranks of Magic, Bird, Kareem, etc. I don't think anyone can touch Jordan and Wilt.

its nostalgia..

I cant speak for anything before the 90s..but guys like Reggie Miller and Penny Hardaway for example are a little overrated in here because people grew up watching em.

Yep. Old people think that everything in the past is better.

Shaq has to be the least talented basketball player I have ever seen play the game. Becuase of his big body and ability to run people over he got easy rebounds and easy scoring opportunities from about 5 feet away from the basket. That can't seriously be regarded as one of the best big men to ever play the game.

Who cares if he has any skills or not. He was good and he won and that's all it matters.

Shaq had a god-given body. He was the perfect Center. He had size, power, quickness, can run the floor, good hands, soft touch, etc. Too bad he didn't maintain it.

And I am pretty sure that CPaul, Lebron, and maybe Dwight if he continues to work on his game will join the legends in the 20's.

If he just had ever worked harder on his shooting ability.

I just hope Dwight Howard watches what Shaq has become now that is hops are gone and learns from Shaq's mistakes.

they are ranked well.
A prime shaq would be too much for any team of any era. He's just too much weight, too much muscle and for his weight, extremely fast and agile. He's the definition of dominance.

Duncan is ranked well. Excellent solid defense, good solid offense in the pick and roll and gets his team involved. He's not a domination force like shaq used to be, but he's great all around.

Kobe gets unfairly treated because people compare him to jordan. Fact is Kobe is only 30, and his game is still peaking probably for another 3-4 years, barring majors injuries. Plus people just hate him for the sake of hating. For the past 2 years post shaq, kobe had scrubs for a team including lamar odumb who was underachieving. That said, Kobe is as consistently great as they come. On a bad day he'll score 20+ and on a good day he'll score 40+. His play for the pass 5 years has been ridiculously top 5 GOAT elite. He will literally take over a game anytime he wants to and tear your heart out. From this perspective, he's not overrated at all. I suspect that with the kind of team the lakers are putting together, the lakers are going to dominate the league for the next 5 years and a lot of people are going to bitch in envy, and when kobe retires and the hate for him dies away that he will be known as on of the goat ever, as great a mj if not more.

lebron should be considered up there too. His main problem now is he's in cleveland and he's still what 23?...so unless he gets another star next to him, he probably won't win a championship, and all that skill and greatness will go away with vain.

To better understand whether they are overrated or underrated, I would suggest people who reply the thread also include their rankings of these 3 players on their all-time lists. This will give others a better idea of the actual situation.

For me:
Shaq - 7th
Duncan - 8th
Kobe - 15th

Shaq is a tough case because coming into the NBA he had great natural ability and a good skillset. He was very skilled coming in but he reached a cross road that Dwight will soon encounter when he realizes he can just dominate everybody do you continue to work on your skills or do you work on dominating everybody. Shaq could have worked on his jump hook or 15 footer but why if you can go inside all day? He still is top 5 big no contest.

Duncan is not underated in any aspect. Top PF alltime, not being compared to centers which would definately allow him to fall out of favor.

Kobe- So similar to Jordan we have to rate him high. I strongly dislike Kobe but I do have to say he is up there but top15 player at best. No taking team on his back yet and had to be a sidekick to win championships so far. Only taken a team out of the 1st round for the first time this season but his skillset, determination, work ethic, and passion make him a great player.

Lebron at 23 has accomplished by his age and with less help a lot already. His potential has him in the top 10 but if he doesnt win he could be in the realms of Barkley, Ewing, and other greats that wont ever be ranked higher due to not winning a championship.

1.Michael Jordan
2.Kareem Abdul Jabbar
3.Bill Russell
4.Magic Johnson
5.Shaquille Oneal
6.Wilt Chamberlain
7.Hakeem Olajuwon
8.Larry Bird
9.Tim Duncan
10.Open to suggestion
