Carlisle new Mavs coach

Post#1 » by KDRE » Sat May 3, 2008 5:51 am

yep it was Vescey but he said they committed to Rick and that if he hasnt signed he will tonight.

The co-host Rick Campbell says "welcome Rick to the dallas family"

Any of you heard this?
Notes: Rookie Rudy Gay twisted his left ankle trying to guard McGrady late in the third quarter and limped to the bench. He returned with 5:51 left, then returned to the bench about a minute later - http://www.nba.com/games/20061231/MEMHOU/recap.html

NEW COACH!!

Post#2 » by Fastbreak5633 » Sat May 3, 2008 5:52 am

Peter Vescey just said on NBA TV that Rick Carlisle is our new head coach. How do you all feel about this? I am thrilled about it. He proved himself to be a great coach. I think he was always maybe a good player or two away from being more successful. CONGRATS!!! Next step gettin rid of Josh Howard.

Anything official?

I have no opinion on him.

IMO i think he's similar to Avery, not sure how legit it is b/c vescey is a piece of sh*t but if he opens up the offense a little i feel good b/c he can coach defense

i think he can grind on players after a couple years and by that time our players should mostly be towards the end of there career.

I would find it surprising that the Mavs had already made a choice. The reports I saw indicated they would take their time. I don't even think Cuban was there for the first interview with Carlisle.

I'd like to see JVG or Eddie George myself but as I said a coupla weeks ago, I like Rick Carlisle also.

Im just glad that it isnt D'Antoni... Im open to seeing how RC runs the team, if the reports are true... I doubt they are though, because it has been 2 days since we fired Avery

If this is true you got yourselves a terrific coach IMO. I've always thought Carlisle was one of the more underrated coaches in the league, and I think he'll do very well for you guys. Happy to see him get a new gig too.

As an assistant under Larry Bird he took care of the offense, while DIck Harter was responsible for the defense. And as you might know Bird relied heavily on his assistants, so I think Carlisle knows a thing or two about offensive schemes.

He didn't thrust his Pacers team enough to give them free reign, and with guys like Artest and Jackson I guess that's understandable to me.

If Carlisle is hired I'm interested to see if he tries to get is hands on some Pacers players like JO and/or Foster.

He's a good coach.....you guys won't be disappointed. Assuming that your team stays out of trouble and remains relatively healthy.....Carlisle should be able to do well. He's a very good "Xs and Os" type of coach.

I forget....were the Mavs a half-court team under Avery? Cuz they will be under Carlisle.

He is a good X and O coach but he is a complete control freak.

Billups would always have to look at Carlisle for the play he wanted to run, basically EVERY time down the court... It really prevents any type of fastbreaks.

He really wore on the players too. I think he lasts 2 years tops unless Dallas wins a championship.

I remember how happy Billups was to finally have some freedom to push the ball after Carlisle left.

He also didn't get along the greatest with Stackhouse... Carlisle's first was Stack's last in Detroit.
Doesn't seem like a good choice for a team with Kidd.

I think Kidd might be the PG he'll give full control over the offense, thus making it more of a run & gun offense.

That would be completely uncharacteristic of Carlisle.

His teams are always the slowest paced in the league.

Good news is the Mavs will be among the leaders in PPG allowed next year.

Bad news is they will score a lot less.

Fewer FG attempts and PPG for many of the Mavs players, which will be hard for some to adjust to for sure.

I think it says something that two GMs who had him before (Donnie Walsh and John Hammond) had coaching vacancies and didn't want him.

Or maybe Carlisle didn't want them. You're talking the Bucks and Knicks as opposed to the Mavs.

I admit, this is what I'm hoping for like Avery pushing for Damp and our collection of off-season fossils.

What kind of offense does Carlisle run? I personally don't care if he's a control freak or if we average below 90 -- all I'm asking for is an offensive set because we didn't have one under Avery. It was all give the ball to Dirk/Howard/Stack on the corner for a clear out; it was sickening to watch.

Second interview for Carlisle, this one with Cuban

Stein - ESPN

Sources told ESPN.com that Carlisle met with Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson on Thursday in Indianapolis and then traveled to Texas on Friday to meet directly with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

One source even described Carlisle as a sudden favorite to succeed Avery Johnson, even though Nelson told The Dallas Morning News in Friday's editions that the Mavs were planning to "show some patience in our search because, after the first round, there could be some very good candidates available."

I'll bet Vescey didn't even contact the Mavs before reporting it.
