Rodney Carney=Rip Hamilton?

Post#1 » by Louis Williams » Sat May 3, 2008 5:09 pm

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/sixers/

"I had my [exit] meeting, and it was brutally honest," Rodney Carney said. "They said the potential's there. I have to work my butt off this summer, come back a little better. They want me to [play] more like [the Pistons'] Rip Hamilton, to come off screens, use my energy. I'm down for that"

Interesting. I never thought about this before, but I can see it.

If he can develop a midrange game like Rip, along with his athleticism, Carney could be a key player for the Sixers in the future.

Carney on jumpers this year: 39.7 efg%
Rip: 49.9 efg%

He's got a long way to go. You may as well tell Miller to work on dunking.

Actually, they did. It was kinda awkward.

He has a whole lot of work to do.

Didn't MJ work with Rip on his game?

If so, we need to get him in here

If not, we need to get Reggie in here.

Then he trade him straight up for Stackhouse.

MJ sent Bobby Simmons in addition and called up every North Carolina Tar Heal he could think of and said he put one over on Joe D

Don't get lost in the magnitude of the comparison, but the style of play. Carney is as athletic as anyone, and he's primarily a set up jump shooter (off the pass). If he can continue to improve his jumper, and improves his endurance, I would think Hamilton's style of play is a great one to emulate.

Just out of curiosity...what was Carney's eFG% on jumpers after the all star game?

So MJ should have 7 rings.

I don't know. He shot 38% from 3 though.

Is Carney really that much of a set up shooter? I feel like he's notorious for always dribbling before he shoots. This seems like something Bods would have a stat for.

The Sixers seriously can't let Carney get buried on the bench again for his 3rd straight year.

I'm really hoping they make a KK-type move to free up more space for him... This time, it's WG who needs to pack his bags. If WG simply must remain on the roster, then bench him.

I am still very supportive of the idea of S + T Iggy to free up swingman space, too.

I hope management is reading this: I will complete divest my passionate fandom and take it elsewhere if WG gets significantly more PT than Carney again next year. That was too painful for me to watch, and I just can't do it again.

That may be, but I think he's a much better shooter when set up off the pass. He's not Rip Hamilton, but I do think that style of game may really benefit him.

It's not impossible. I don't think Carney is ever going to be a creator. But he can be a good catch and shoot guy, and he has the energy and speed to work off screens. He's still a young player trying to find his niche in the league.

Like the coaching staff says, the potential is there, he just has to put in the work.

Just from sight, he seemed to be a lot better at catch and shooting than creating his own, and I actually saw some promise with him coming off of screens. His catch and shoot when unguarded was better than 69% of the nba.

Looking it up, on his "no dribble jumpers" he was more efficient than 47% of the nba, so about average.

I meant that I'm not sure whether that's something he does with regularity. What % of his shots are off the dribble versus off the pass.

so were are these screens gonna come from? damn sure not sam from sam, reggie or jason. young's the only guy that can set a screen on this team.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

I have faith in Jason Smith setting screens. Not to the effect of a great screen setter, but he could probably do it well.

i have more faith in smith than reggie or sam for sure too.

(screens are beneath the kinda talent that reggie has, the ball should always be in his hands)
