OT: Carlisle Is New Mavs Head Coach

I think it's a good thing the Bucks didn't wait on Carlisle. I can't imagine any reason why he would take the Bucks job over the Dallas job.

epi/bigzy - any news on whether Stotts will be on Carlisle's staff in Dallas?

Waiting to hire a coach actually never made much sense to me anyway. The better coaches are going to hold out for some of the better teams in the league who are looking for a coach. And waiting would have put us in a position to take whatever was left and possibly ending up with the same results we had with Stotts and Kyrskowiak. Glad he finally found a job.. I'm just happy we nabbed Skiles quickly.

I agree. Hammond acted decisively and the Bucks got a proven winner as a head coach.

Actually when you think about it Carlisle appeared to pull a Flip Saunders on many of the teams chasing him... He waited situations out and instead of being the new head coach in NY, Milwaukee, or wherever else.. He finally agreed to terms with a team that has proven themselves to have the talent already in place to win. He doesn't have to wait through drafts, FA signings or "building" to the point where they can possibly win.. He hooks on to a winner and then can relish in how well they continue to do with some of his assistance.

If one is given a job interview for an NBA team, you take it. Why not consider all your options, see what teams will pay you, and go through the interview process. Nothing bad could happen.

Also, when Carlisle was looking at other teams before the playoffs, no one knew for certain that Avery Johnson would be out. Its possible that Carlisle looked around and saw that maybe Dallas or Phoenix would open, but he wasn't using other teams for leverage. If he wanted to do that, he could have gone to interview with other teams during negotiations with Dallas.

I think Carlisle made a smart move. He probably isn't as desperate to coach as Larry Brown and could wait it out and find the right opportunity. Im sure Cuban is paying him good money.

The real question is now though (at least one that Bucks fans might think is important): how does this affect Howard's status on the team?

It has been rumored here in Chicago that if Carlisle had taken the Bulls job, he would have brought both Stotts and Dwayne Casey along as assistants. There was some speculation that Casey would be the coach in waiting, for when Carlisle wears out his welcome.

I have no idea if those rumors had any basis in fact.

Has nothing to do with seeing them as equivalent epi, more that they weren't first choice when we were looking to replace a fired coach.

The topic, and attacks, that were going on here have no place on the Bucks board. There are other areas of realgm where you can be free to discuss those issues all you want. Or there are thousands of other boards besides realgm
